Tumwater is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Tumwater is located on the east side of Puget Sound and is bordered to the south by Bainbridge Island and to the north by Olympia. One of the first towns in what would become King County was Tumwater, established in 1853 by pioneers John Wesley Powell and David Douglas. In 1909, when King County was organized into two counties, Tumwater remained within Thurston County until 1959. The community's name comes from an Indian word meaning "place where water flows." A post office called Tumwater was established in 1853, and remained in operation until 1907. The first electric lights were put up in Tumwater on November 10th 1907 by J.[ohn] C[hristopher] Morse while he was working for Western Electric Company as a carpenter with their employees who had built a switchboard on Bennett’s Hill near Olympia. At that time there were no streetlights or other amenities available in this remote corner of rural Washington Territory so this event helped inaugurate one of America’s most important telephone companies! When we look back at these early days it amazes us how things have changed over time! Today we enjoy all types of amenity options such as cell phone service, internet access ( via Gigabit connections), parks and playgrounds for our children (including world-renowned SeaTac Park!), nightlife including several bars/clubs located right near our town square (and many more coming soon!), grocery stores which are always increasing in variety and quality thanks to advances in technology & agriculture etc., etc., etc….. And yet somehow everything remains relatively calm & comfortable despite all these new additions! What a privilege it must be to live here – can you imagine living anywhere but here? Custer and his regiment during the American Civil War. The town was founded in 1871 by Colonel Isaac Goodrich and others after they surveyed a tract of land on the Yakima River east of Olympia. The first post office in Tumwater was established in 1870. In 1886, Tumwater became part of the newly formed Thurston County and had its own government with a Mayor and Council members as well as schools and county services such as roads and fire protection. In 1907, Tumwater incorporated as a city with its own police department which still exists today. In 1959, Tumwater joined KING-TV's new satellite network which made it one of the first television markets in Washington State when it started transmissions from atop Seattle's Space Needle on July 1 that year. At that time there were no cable services or internet connections so viewers could only watch local programming from KING-TV or other providers through antennas outside their homes or businesses. Over time KING-TV has become one of the most popular stations in Thurston County due to its high quality news programs combined with easy access to local attractions like Lake Union Park and Mount Rainier National Park within driving distance for residents & visitors alike
The first European to sight the area now known as Tumwater was Captain James Clark in 1792. The first permanent settler in Tumwater was David Denny in 1811. Northern Pacific Railroad arrived on the scene in 1867, and by 1901, the town had a population of over 1000 people. The town experienced growth following World War II as Boeing airplanes were flown from Seattle to Tacoma and other parts of the Northwest.
