Tumwater is a town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend–Oregontown, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Tumwater area has been inhabited by the Lumbee and Ohlone people for centuries. The first European to visit Tumwater was Captain John Mayflower in 1607 when he and his party of English colonists set out from Plymouth Colony on the Mayflower Compact. In 1851, Tumwater became the site of one of two townships in Washington County that were organized when Donner Pass became available for sale as a roadbed through Oregon Territory. In 1853, gold was discovered at Gold Hill within easy reach of both Tumwater and Bend, creating an intensecommercial interest in the area. Businesses soon sprang up around mills and mines owned by J. P. Morgan, James Klamath Bankhead, Wm Halsey Greeley and others; more than 100 businesses operated near Gold Hill during its early years. By 1870 however, milling had become so important to local economy that only 10% of income came from agriculture; most residents dependedotally upon commerce for their livelihoods In 1875-76 a small irrigation project was undertaken to improve water supplies for local farming communities located west of Bend During World War II Japanese Imperial forces occupied much of northeastern Oregon including parts of Tumwater; consequently most citizens were interned until 1945 without any legal rights or recourse under U.S law Afterward many residents returned home (many who had never left) but some continued living in Japan until 1994 when they obtained full U.S citizenship . Today few if any Japanese remain in Tumwater although there are occasional visits from family members
