In 1984, Boeing Corporation placed an order for eight ESSM carriers that would provide air cover and maritime security around Diego Garcia Island during Operation Desert Storm; these planes were finally delivered in 1988! In 1992, another EA-6B Prowler airplane was ordered from McDonnell Douglas Corp., but this order was not filled because there were no available funds to purchase new planes at that time.
