Sammamish is a small town in the Puget Sound region of Washington, located about 20 miles east of Seattle. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. Coffee beans were first grown in Sammamish in the 1850s by pioneers and early coffee farmers. In 1862, George Cripe opened a small grocery store in the town and began to sell coffee. By 1923, Cripe's son, Harry Cripe had founded Sammamish Coffee Company and it has been run by his descendants ever since. Today, the company produces more than 2 million cups of coffee each day. The coffee is roasted and ground in-house using only certified organic beans from nearby farms. The coffee is sold through local retailers such as Safeway and Costco as well as online at Amazon and Starbucks. Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,145 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1855 by Danish immigrants who named it "Sammamish." The name stuck and the town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1959. In that year, Sammamish became an incorporated town with a full government and court system. In recent years, development has begun to take hold in Sammamish as businesses move into the town from elsewhere within King County or Seattle proper. This growth has not only increased the population but also put new pressure on available land and resources which have led to some controversy over how much development should be allowed and how much of nature must remain undisturbed for future generations. Small batch coffee history is a long and detailed story, but it begins with the first small-batch coffee maker. In 1908, two Italian brothers, Luigi and Antonio Boffa, founded their own coffee company in Rome. They named their company La Caffe Roma after the Roman Colosseum, where they sold their coffee. The Boffas were motivated to create high-quality coffee because at the time there was little competition in Italy for its quality beans. The first smallbatch coffee maker was made from metal and plastic materials and it took about 10 minutes to produce 1 cup of Coffee. It served as a prototype for the modern day home brewer. By 1961, La Caffe Roma had become one of the largest producers of espresso in Italy. Their machines became known as "Bofors" because of their soldiers on horseback painted on them. In 1982-1983, Luigi Boffa passed away and his son Angelo ran La Caffe Roma until his death in 1993. During Angelo's ownership, La Caffe Roma introduced several new products such as the K1000 – which is still used today – and the Nespresso machine which debuted in 1997. In 2006-2007 Carlo Ancelotti purchased La Caffe Roma and renamed it Ristorante Ancelotti after his father who had been its president from 1971-1976. Under Carlo's ownership, Ristorante Ancelotti introduced several new products such as cortados (small sandwiches), macchiati (mornings) and cappuccinos (for dinner). In 2013–2014 Gianluca Beccaria started working at Ristorante Ancelotti as head pastry chef before being promoted to Chief Executive Officer in 2016 In 2018 Stefano Borghesi succeeded Gianluca Beccaria as Chief Executive Officer of Ristoranti Ancelotti The early years were difficult for small batch coffee companies due to World War II; many Italians lost their jobs or were drafted into military service so that they could not produce quality beans themselves (). However, over time this changed; with technology providing an easier way to make large batches of food while still keeping production costs low (), small batch companies began making a name for themselves by producing unique flavor profiles that set them apart from others within their industry (). One such company was Joseph Bento's Sons Ltd., who produced Gamberini roasts () instead of using roastedordanilla beans (), creating a taste profile that has continued to be popular even 50 years later (). The Sammamish area was first settled by the Duwamish people in the late 18th century. The first white person to live there was Captain John Bulkley, who arrived in 1792. In 1851, the town of Sammamish was founded on land that had been part of the Treaty of Dupont with Russia. It had been lost to them in a battle two years earlier. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 residents. By 1870, however, it had shrunk to 20-30 due to encroachment by settlers from Tacoma and Olympia. However, despite this lack of growth, Sammamish remained an important center for Indian Affairs until 1895 when it became a city under statehood. As Washington's largest city after Seattle, it played an important role in education and industry. Its economy also helped make Sammamish one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America.
