Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Sammamish were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals. The first permanent settler in what is now Sammamish was George Vancouver in 1846. He named his land Bidwell after Rear Admiral John Bidwell, who had been his sponsor on his sea voyage from England to America. As development began near the end of the 19th century, Bidwell's name became associated with a logging company that developed the land east of present-day Sammamish Boulevard between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. In 1906, when Seattle annexed King County, it included what was then Sammamish Township as one of its original areas; however, no residents moved to join Seattle until 1950. In that year developer Harry Weisbrot purchased an tract of . bisected by Park Way NW and Snohomish Boulevard NE which he renamed "Sammamish". By 1965 all but 2 acres (1 km²) had been developed by Weisbrot into retail shopping centers and office buildings; this tract remains unincorporated today although much of it has since been rezoned for housing developments such as CenturyLink Field and KeyArena. It wasn't until 1994 when voters passed a referendum supporting annexation of neighboring Mercer Island which created new municipal boundaries for King county including Sammamish Township withinKing County limits south of University Way SWand north of Interstate 5 Exit 163A - making it possible for the town to annex itself without having to go throughSeattle's city council or ballot box The new municipality approved incorporation on December 17th 1995 with a population of 1,912 residents

Sammamish is located on the right bank of Sammamish River between Olympia and Bellevue. The first European to visit what is now Sammamish was Juan de Fuca, captain of HMS Discovery who anchored near present-day Sammamish on September 25, 1592. Facing difficulties getting his men ashore due to rapids and steep cliffs he decided to wait for help before continuing his voyage northwestward and claiming land for Spain along the way. On October 20 sammamish had its name changed from Poulsbo (Portugal) to Suquame (Spanish). British explorer John Jacob Astley explored Puget Sound in 1792 and named it after British Admiral James Cook's vessel "HMS Resolution". In 1810 Captain George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and named it after himself although no map exists that supports this claim. Swedish trader Gabrielsson established a post atSammamish Cove on November 5, 1792 while exploring Bainbridge Island which became part of Seattle shortly afterwards In 1851 Congress passed an act allotting all non-tribal lands east of the Rocky Mountains within Washington to various Indian tribes including the Wahkiakumeka tribe ceded by Britain as part of Treaty 7 in 1846 The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was created as result of this legislation In 1909 an act creating King County was passed which included most of what is now Sammamish . This resulted in Canadien Pierre Trudeau becoming Prime Minister under circumstances where Canada would have annexation by America if it were not for Ulysses S Grant vetoing American annexation plans
