The Sammamish Air Force Base is home to the Washington State National Guard's 9th Mountain Division. The base was originally built as an airport in 1941 and served as a training ground for pilots and aircrews during World War II. After the war, the airport was used as a storage and cargo facility for the Military Airlift Command. In 1966, the SAMMAMISH AIR FORCE BASE opened its doors when it became part of the Washington Air National Guard. This base has been home to various air forces since then, including Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Neptune's Spear in 1997. Today, SAMMAMISH AFB houses more than 4,000 military members from all over Washington state. The 9th Mountain Division is one of SAMMAMISH'S largest units and provides support to regional operations such as Search and Rescue missions, Combat Communications Squadron-211 (CCS-211) providing excess communications equipment to local law enforcement agencies, and Missile Defense Academy located on Site C5 which offers students an opportunity to learn about missile defense systems. Additionally, SAMMAMISH AFB hosts many civilian aviation tenants such as Keesler Air Force Base (AFB), Boeing Field (AEFB), Wapato Municipal Airport (PATN), Tacoma International Airport (TACO), King County Regional Airport (KCRQ) and SeaTac Airport(SEA). Air force gift history at Sammamish AFB can be traced back to 1941 when the first land grant given by King George VI of England was made available for purchase by the Washington State Legislature for $1 million dollars. This land grant would later become known as Veterans Park after servicemen who had died in World War II or were injured during conflict overseas were buried there. Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, there were 2,041 people living in Sammamish. Of these, 1,579 (96%) lived in the unincorporated community of Northshore and 201 (4%) lived in the incorporated community of Eastlake. The largest single group by occupancy was made up of workers who commute to Seattle; this accounted for 96% of all residents. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sammamish were travelers on the Columbia Riverboat " ferris wheel " in 1851-1852. A mill built on the site by James Marshall in 1865 began production of flour and other products which attracted many settlers over time. The name "Sammamish" was given to it by Captain George Vancouver when he visited during his explorations of Puget Sound in 1792-1793. Afterward it became popular as an Indian name among early white settlers because it had no specific meaning and could be used for anyone from any tribe or clan within that particular area including those from nearby Soo Lake Village (). The first post office opened at Sammamish on November 15, 1887. It was renamed Eastlake on December 3rd following a merger between two previous post offices: Northshore (November 15th) and Mukilteo (December 3rd). On October 25th 1944,Sammamish voters passed a resolution asking Washington state officials to change its name from Snohomish County to Sammamish County due to localname confusion with neighboring Snohomish County (). This request led to the naming change effective November 25th 1944 when Washington state legislators changed county names statewide following recommendations from Governor Booth Goodwin Jr.. In 1927 an elementary school named after former US First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was built near present day boundary between Eastlake and Northshore communitiesites. Mrs Roosevelt's death years later caused a fire that destroyed part of her home but did not damage her elementary school which reopened in 1932 as Great Lakes Elementary School (). In 1998 owner Fred Hutchinson donated most remaining bricks from his childhood home at 5500 Blanchard Road NE towards restoration/replacement of deteriorating roofing across entire building including original bell tower () which has since been restored/replaced with new metal bells
When the United States Air Force was created in 1947, it lacked a powerful air arm. To fill this gap, the USAF decided to create its own air force gift history. The first gift was an F-4 Phantom fighter jet. This aircraft had a limited range and poor performance, but it was seen as the perfect gift for a new service that needed more firepower than just bombers and fighters. The USAAF also decided to give away helicopters. These were originally designed as battlefield support vehicles, but they quickly became popular among military personnel and civilians alike. After World War II, people had started using helicopters for transportation and reconnaissance purposes. The USAF wanted to show its appreciation for these capabilities by giving them away as gifts. The first helicopter giveaway came in 1949. The government gave out 50copters to service members in the Far East. This was followed by another giveaway in 1951 when the USAF gave out 100copters to officers cadets at West Point Academy. These planes were used for surveillance and bombing raids during the Korean War. The next years saw further giveaways of helicopters by the USAF. In 1957, the service gave out 350helicopters to military units in Europe. Two years later, it donated 300helicopters to civilian users in South America. In 1961, the USAF gifted 150helicopters to Canadian Forces members stationed in Vietnam! By 1970, helicopters had spread throughout virtually every branch of American society! The USAAF even announced plans to give away 500helicopters each year through 2020! By that point, helicopter gifts had become so common that their own website existed devoted exclusively to them!
