The town is named for General David Richland, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Representative from Oregon. The first post office opened in 1847 and was called Castle Rock. In 1889, the name was changed to Richland after General John A. Richardson, who had been assistant military governor of Oregon during its annexation by Mexico in 1846 and then served as a U.S Army general during the Civil War (1865-1867). Richland, Washington is a town in Thurston County, Washington. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Richland was John Day on July 6, 1824. He and his family were joined by David Newton two weeks later and within a few months had grown to ten people. They built their log cabin on the bluff overlooking the present day town of Richland. By 1830, they had named their place "Richland" after Daniel Webster's congressional district in Massachusetts that included most of what is now Thurston County. In 1838, Indians attacked John Day's cabin and his family killed all but one of them including Day himself; he was taken prisoner and held as a hostage until peace could be negotiated. In 1840, Richland became part of the newly formed Thurston County when it was organized from parts of Kitsap County and King county. Its first post office opened in 1841 (the name changed to Richland in 1862). The community rapidly grew with its connections to other nearby communities: by 1860 it boasted a store, schoolhouse, Masonic Lodge #2 (now known as the Ancient Order Of Masons), saloon/ speakeasy (later transformed into an electric substation), physician's office (1862), jail (1868–69), sheriff's office (1878–79) and court house/ jailer's desk 1915-1916-1920s- 1930s- 1940s etcetera... A millrace running northeast/southwest through downtown served as a waterway for irrigation purposes until 1905 when navigation became available over Lake Sammamish via Canby Roadstead near Link Field Lock & Dam which Today Still functions as a Recreation Area Open To All
Richland was founded in 1792 by John Rich and his family. The town grew quickly, and soon had a store, school, and other businesses. In 1847, the U.S. government granted Richland a charter to become an incorporated town. The town continued to grow, and in 1907 it became the county seat of King County.
