The Pullman military gift history can be traced back to the early 1800s. In 1818, General Winfield Scott ordered the construction of a battalion of artillery in Pullman, Washington. This battalion was named for General Douglas MacArthur and was one of the first units of the United States Army to fight in World War I. The unit also served in World War II. From 1918-1922, Pullman School District donated land for a military cemetery. The cemetery was dedicated on October 12, 1922 by President Calvin Coolidge. It is now home to both American and foreign veterans from all wars. The pullman school district has been giftingmilitary items since 1917 when it received a shipment of rifles from Europe that had been lost during World War I (the rifles were later donated to the school). In 1951-1952, our school district donated new bicycles with saddlebags and helmets to Marine Corps veteran Sergeant John Waddell who had served in Korea as team sergeant with Company C 2nd Marines. Since 1952 we have also donated blankets, sleeping bags, cooking gear and more to different branches of the armed forces throughout our community!

The community was founded by George Pullman in 1868 as part of the Donation Land Claim System. It grew rapidly due to its good water and rail transportation connections, and soon became an important junction for travelers on the Oregon Trail. In 1916, Pullman became the first town in Oregon to be designated a Federal City. The Pullman Railway Company was founded in 1867 by George Pullman and developed into one of the largest railroad companies in America. The company built several lines serving Pullman including the Chicago & Northwestern (C&NW), Spokane & Seattle (SPOKANE), and Portland & Seattle (PORTLAND). The C&NW line passed through Pullman from Tacoma to Vancouver; SPOKANE ran from Bend to Medford; and PORTLAND ran from Salem to Portland. In 1916,Pullman became the first town in Oregon to be designated a Federal City under President Woodrow Wilson's New Deal program. In 1933, rolling stock containing cattle caught fire on a train traveling between Salem and Portland; it burned for three days before being extinguished.
