Mount Vernon is a large, artificial hill located in the town of Mount Vernon, Washington County, Ohio. The hill was built by George Washington and his family in 1799-1800 as their plantation home. Mount Vernon became a national Historic Site in 1980. The original Mount Vernon estate was about 3 square miles (7 km2). It consisted of 15 buildings on an artificial mound rising to a height of 375 feet (111 m). Most of the land around the estate was used for agriculture, but part of it was dedicated to housing the Washington family and their staff. The first building on the estate was built by George Washington's father-in-law Colonel John Thornton. Other early homes included No. 2 House, completed in 1798; Mrs. Washington's House, begun in 1800 but not finished until 1802; Headquaters House (not completed until after Mr. Washington's death in 1799), which served as headquarters for several years during the war with France; and Westmoor Manor (completed c1797), which later became known as Eastmoor Manor after its owner died childless. In 1799-1800, when George Washington moved into his new home at Mount Vernon from his earlier home at Alexandria Barracks near Georgetown Courthouse, he commissioned Major Nicholas Wright to design and build him a new mansion on this property which would become one of America's most influential presidential residences. Wright designed a single story structure with two stories added later – both facing eastward towards Philadelphia across Chesterfield Creek – and it featured an internal garden with tennis courts and other recreational amenities that were unique at that time among presidential dwellings. Upon completion,Mount Vernon looked much like nothing then existing in America: it had no equivalent anywhere else within minutes' travel of major population centers! George Washington continued living at Mount Vernon until his death there on February 12th, 1840 aged 87 years 5 months 9 days old after having served as President for 39 months and 7 days! He is buried next to his wife Martha CustisWashington inside what is today Arlington National Cemetery.(Robert Erskine Childress) Inscriptions on two small stone tablets nearby commemorate this event: "GEORGE WASHINGTON D & M A RTHA CUSTISWashington March 12th 1840" One important aspect of MtVernon history are all the documents that have been found inside including deeds etcetera dating back to before 1800...There are also busts or memorials made here such as General James Kellar who fought against Mexico while stationed here during War 1&2...Some items such as furniture etcetera have also been found outside including some cannons etcetera
