The Mercer Island National Guard was created on July 1, 1947 by an act of the United States Congress. The Guard is a department of the Department of Defense and is headquartered at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington. Mercer Island's National Guard began its history with a small detachment from Seattle's 5th Infantry Division which arrived on the island on September 12, 1946. The first unit to be mobilized was Company C of the 9th Infantry Regiment drawn from Everett and Bainbridge Counties. In 1951, Congress authorized the creation of a National Guard battalion for Mercer Island and two companies were activated that year. In 1957, another battalion was authorized for Mercer Island and again in 1961; these units became Companies D and E of Battalion B (7th Infantry Regiment). On August 15, 1966, Headquarters Battery (HBP) 447th Field Artillery Battalion was activated at Joint Base Lewis-McChord as part of activation ceremonies for Regional Command II which included all military installations within the Northwest Region including Mercer Island. A detachment from HBP 458th FA also arrived on MERCER ISLAND on December 6, 1966 to provide training support to company A/521st Armor Battalion who had just deployed to Vietnam after serving as infantrymen in Operation Market Time at An Khe near Saigon. In 1970 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2batn) 3rd Armored Division moved into JBNLMC while Detachment 383d Air Control Squadron provided air monitoring over Puget Sound during anti ice exercise Northwoods 506 that summer. On October 251978 1st Brigade Combat Team (1batn), 3rd Armored Division moved into JBNLMC while Detachment 384d Air Control Squadron provided air monitoring over Puget Sound during anti ice exercise Northwoods 508 that fall). Since 1987 there has been continuous growth with an additional brigade combat team being activated each year with mixed US Army/Marine Corps personnel providing security including signals intelligence support as needed along with detachments from other services when appropriate such as law enforcement or emergency response operations

The 1st Regiment, New York State Militia was activated in 1776 and served in various engagements until 1783 when it was disbanded. In 1802, the 1st Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry was organized and served for two years during the War of 1812. It was then disbanded in 1814. In 1861, the 2d New York Volunteers were organized and served as part of the Union army during the Civil War. The regiment was eventually disbanded in 1865. After the Civil War ended, many states formed their own national guard regiments or units which were known as companies or battalions of militia. These units continued to be active until 1903 when they were finally dissolved effective July 1, 1903 by an act of Congress as part of a general order disbanding all military forces throughout America effective November 15th). From its inception through 1903, however, the National Guard had a strong connection to both politics and culture within each state. This relationship is demonstrated by numerous items owned or kept by members of the National Guard who have been passed down through generations including weapons such as pistols and rifles dating back to Revolutionary War times; Confederate flags flown at various unofficial events; and Governor's Ribbons worn by Military Officers upon their retirement from service (a traditiondating back to Revolutionary War days). One significant exception to this pattern is that between 1898-1903 there was no regular Army presence on American soil due to World War I; instead troops were used for occupation duty overseas. As a result, many items belonging to members of local militias became available for purchase or donation to museums or private collections across America.
