The island has a population of around 1,500 people and it was first settled by the Native Americans. In 1851, Father Gabriel Richard founded an institute on Mercer Island which helped promote education among native children. The institute also helped find new land for settlers on Mercer Island. In 1915, the United States government purchased the island from its private owners and it became part of the US military base known as Fort Point Naval Shipyard. The fort was demolished in 1922 and now there are few remains of the fort on Mercer Island. However, during World War II, Fortress Point Naval Shipyard produced some of America's most famous ships such as USS Perry (FF-9) and USS Seattle (BB-2). Today, Fort Point Naval Shipyard is home to various Navy vessels as well as civilian businesses such as Boeing Co.'s Everett Plantation Resort & Marina and Microsoft Corp.'s Moses Lake Research Station.

Mercer Island is located in Kitsap County, Washington and has been inhabited by the Dalles tribe for over a thousand years. The first European to visit Mercer Island was Captain George Vancouver on July 17,1792. He named it after Sir John Mercer, 1st Baronet of Lonsdale who had died in 1787. In 1851, the United States Congress designated Mercer Island as part of Puget Sound. In 1959, the island became part of the City of Seattle and remains an annexed community within that city today. The land that now makes up Mercer Island was first populated by the Dalles people in the late 1800s. At that time there were several small villages on what is now Mercer Island including Sunnyside and North Beach. The name “Mercer” comes from Chief Kamekamek’s father-in-law, “Mercer” or “the Crabber” because he collected seahells off the coast of Vancouver Island. After chief Kamekamek died in 1824 his son Tuktukwila inherited his estate and continued to live on Mercer Island until his death in 1868 at age 85 years old. Then it passed through a number of families before landing with Captain John Fife on December 14,1851 at Point Defiance (now Seattle). In 1865 another group of Americans landed at Point Defiance frombuildings on Orcas Islands just off shore which led to what is now called the Fife Incident when Commodore James Cook discovered American ships anchored offshore without permission from Spain and demanded they leave under threat of force if they did not leave immediately. A battle ensued during which two American sailors were killed while five Spanish sailors were taken prisoners aboard ship Columbus which then returned back to Spain with their prizes according to US law at that time! This event is also sometimes referred to as The Spanish War Of Harbor Access because it led to increased US efforts to control access into Puget Sound through Juan de Fuca Strait! In 1862 British explorer Alexander Graham Bell founded a observatory on Mount Baker near Olympia using funds provided by Jules Verne but never moved its equipment or staff due to technical difficulties caused by strong winds blowing through Elliott Bay during winter months! In 1875 Russian Rear Admiral Dmitrii Kozlovsky visited Bainbridge Islands near Tacoma and made an observation deck for his ship Novaya Zvezda overlooking Elliott Bay which served as one of Klondike Gold Rush history's earliest tourist attractions! In 1899 construction began on a lighthouse called Light House No 4 following designs submitted by Danish architect Maurer who also designed Key West Naval Station lighthouse four miles south along Elliott Bay! On October 21st 1914 Light House No 5 was officially dedicated becoming one of America's most distinctive lighthouses ever built! With global competition increasing for shipping lanes opening up between Europe and Asia new ports such as Seattle being developed further north Puget Sound became increasingly difficultto navigate so interest in expandingharbor access began to develop among both commercial vessels operating outof Puget Soundand also those searching for gold & silver ore located throughout central Washington coastline!. By 1919 light house numbers 7 thru 11 had all been completed along with associated wooden masts & spires making way for brick barracks housing officers & men respectively!!
