Lynden is located in the Yakima Valley and has been a center of coffee culture for more than 100 years. The city was founded by Couggan, a Scottish settler, in 1853 as the town of Goodyear. In 1916, Lynden became the first city in Washington to prohibit discrimination on the basis of race.
Lynden, Washington is a town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The name Lynden has been borne by several people including: 1) A pioneering logger and developer who named his property after nearby Lynden Lake in 1887; 2) A rancher and agriculturalist who donated land to Yakima County in 1912; 3) A legislator and businessman who served as Mayor of Yakima from 1966 to 1974; 4) An entrepreneur who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1984; and 5) The current mayor.
Some coffee historians believe that the coffee beans that we have today were first roasted in the early to mid-19th century. Coffee was first introduced to Europe by traders and sailors who brought it back with them on voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. The beans were ground and brewed using a variety of methods, including roasting them on board ship. By the end of the 18th century, coffee had spread throughout much of North America and parts of South America. The first time that coffee was found in Chicago was in 1845 when a group of Americans traveling through Mexico City stopped at an inn near Wicker Park. They were given some coffeebeans by one of the hotelkeepers and tasted them before going on their way. The next year, a man named John McNaught purchased some land around what is now Dearborn Street and developed it into what is now Chicago’s most significant commercial center. In 1860, he built his first store in this area, which became known as McNaught’s Narrow Streets Building. By 1870, McNaught had become one of the largest merchants in Chicago. He also started trading coffee beans from his store to other stores all over the city. In 1886, Edwin Land began growing coffee trees on his farm near Arlington Heights (now suburban Bridgeview). After several years of trials and errors, he finally succeeded in getting his crop off the ground and began shipping crates of fresh beans to various locations throughout Illinois and Michigan. His success led to other farmers starting farms around Illinois similarly interested in growing quality bean products for export markets overseas. Over time, these small growers grew Into large businesses that still produce high-quality coffees today!
The first coffee beans were grown in the fertile valley of Gaudi in Andalusia, Spain, in the early 18th century. Coffee was used as a beverage for Greek and Moorish traders and slaves. In 1775, Dutch entrepreneurs bought a small plantation near Batavia (now Jakarta) for the purpose of growing coffee. The first commercial production began in 1785. The value of coffee exports reached two million guilders per year by 1800. In 1810, Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a process to make espresso from ground coffee with hot water and milk. By 1840, all European countries had coffeepots.
Lynden, Washington is a small town located in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 1,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Lynden name may be derived from a local Indian word meaning "milk" or "water." The first Europeans to visit Lynden were Spanish traders in 1815. They named the site San Lorenzo de las Anas (Santo Lorenzo Point), after Saint Lorenzo, an Italian missionary who had visited the area in 1792. In 1824, George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and named it for Lieutenant General David Thompson on account of his relief expedition during the Gold Rush of 1849-1851. Lynden Village was platted in 1889 by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church as a place where they could sell milk to farmers around Kitsap County. A post office was established at Lynden in 1902, and remained in operation until 1975. In 1905, residents voted to incorporate as a town under Washington state law. On May 12, 1907, Lynden became one of three towns within King County when that county was created following the passage of State Question 7 (1907). At that time, King County included all of Kitsap and Snohomish counties except Thurston County which was then part of Mason County. On February 20th, 1912 Lynden's first school opened with 52 students from eight homes teaching agricultural classes using horsepower power plants located near present day Cheney Lake Road and I-5 southbound exit #8A (now known as Valley View Drive). Classes continued through 1915 but due to World War I shortages of funds both schools closed down and did not reopen until 1948 when special appropriations were made for them by then Governor William Cullen Bryant pursuant to Federal Aid program No reimbursement given! Only two years later on April 15th 1916 young people from nearby Lynnwood organized themselves into their very own Girls' High School District No longer would our girls have to go door to door peddling textbooks!
Lynden was founded in 1853, and became a town in 1895. It is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Washington state. The town was named for General Nathaniel Lyon, who helped lead the U.S. forces during the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Oregon.
