Lakewood is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The name Lakewood comes from the creek that flows through it and its neighboring communities. There were two other towns in this area before Lakewood—Poulsbo and Kirkland—were established as villages within the then-large city of Seattle in 1907. In 1911, Poulsbo was merged into Seattle and Kirkland became a separate municipality. In 1925, Tacoma was annexed to King County and all of Tacoma's municipalities were combined with Lakewood to form one town. On March 15, 1933, lake effect floods swept over parts of central Puget Sound due to heavy rains from Tropical Depression 9 (later named Katrina) near Cuba Point on the Olympic Peninsula; most of what is now Lakewood was destroyed or heavily damaged by waterlogging that week. The damage totaled $5 million (equivalent to $350 million in ). In 1960, an act called "An Act To Consolidate All Municipalities In King County" created three new towns: Issaquah, Woodinville, and Ballard along with their respective sheriff's offices; Everett had been annexed into Shoreline as an additional community since 1959 but did not join any of these Towns until 1961 when it also joined Bellevue as another large city in the region. As population growth began to outstrip land regeneration opportunities in central Puget Sound following World War II,[1] residents started moving away from centralSeattle towards subdivisions such as Sawtooth Lakes Estates east of Interstate 5 (now Discovery Bay). As a result of this development there were concerns about how much open space would be left for education after many homes had been built on emptied agricultural land around town center between 1956 and 1966.[2] A group led by Mayor Clairfontaine formed the Committee for Open Space which together developed recommendations for land use within Town limits that eventually led to annexation by Bellevue onto which came plans for a shopping mall adjacent to Interstate 5 which would house Safeway grocery store chain[3],[4],[5]. Another issue raised during these negotiations was whether or not recreational vehicle encampments should be allowed on open space within Town Limits while others argued against unrestricted camping because they worried about future conflicts over access rights.[6],[7] Ultimately agreements were reached whereby both Issaquah and Woodinville annexed onto Bellevue creating today's Lakewood with its mix of suburban/rural housing developments with some undeveloped open space surrounding it
