In the late 1800s, coffee beans were still being grown in small batches on family farms in Kenmore and neighboring towns. The first commercial coffee roasters began to open their doors around 1900. By 1915, various small businesses had begun to sell coffee pre-packaged in sacks or boxes. By the 1920s, a number of local chain stores had started to sell coffee. These chains sold both bulk and packaged coffee products. In the 1940s, a new type of store called "the grocery" opened up that sold only coffee. This store became popular because it was close to home and it offered a wide variety of coffees from all over the world for purchase. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, more and more people moved into town and started cafes or restaurants. As these cafes increased their production levels, they also began to offer more expensive types of coffees such as Sumatra, Ethiopia, Java and cortlandt rimini blends. In 1978, Starbucks Corporation opened its first shop in town which quickly became one of Kenmore's most popular tourist destinations. Kenmore's early coffee history can be traced back to the 1800s when Dutch farmers began to farm in the area. The earliest mention of coffee being grown in Kenmore is from a letter written by explorer, John Wesley Powell, in 1869. In that letter, Powell mentioned that he had found beans growing wild near his home and decided to try them out. He was not disappointed, as the beans were very good and tasted more like coffee than tea.
Kenmore is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. The name of the town was chosen in 1876 and derives from the Kenmore family's lumbering operations in the area. The Kenmore Lumber Company was founded by Colonel Nathan Kenmore in 1875. The company produced logs for export to Japan and other countries. In 1916, Colonel Nathan's son-in-law John Dickson took over the management of the company. Dickson developed a logging program that resulted in cleaning up forests and reducing wood harvesting use by 30%. In 1935, Captain James Ewing became general manager of Kenmore Lumber Company when it merged with Bicknell Lumber Company. He increased production while keeping prices low so that consumers could afford to purchase products from the company. After World War II,Captain Ewing increased profits through marketing innovations such as using recycled materials in flooring and insulation products After Captain Ewing retired in 1975, his son-in-law Brent Ksiazynski became general manager until his retirement in 2000 Brent Ksiazynski's wife Shannon managened day-to-day operations until her retirement effective July 1, 2006 John Hickey assumed responsibility for day-to-day operations effective July 1, 2006 after Shannon's retirement
The first coffee was roasted in Sumatra in the 6th century and was named after a god. The beans were ground and brewed with hot water to create a drink that had a bitter taste and a heavy body. Coffee became popular in Europe after Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492 and brought back plants from his trip. Coffee began to be exported to other parts of the world, including Japan, India, and Africa. In 1847, the French started to import coffee from Brazil. The Brazilian people grew addicted to the flavor and made their own coffee beans which they exported to France. By 1830, most of Europe had switched over to coffee drinking because of its popularity as a drink for rich people. However, due to health reasons such as tuberculosis (TB) and consumption of lead-based paint, many Europeans turned back to tea during the 19th century. In 1905, Dutchman Hugo Rauch founded Koffiekransje in Rotterdam with his friend Jan van der Sloot. Koffiekransje became famous for its gourmet coffee products such as roasts, liquids (skillets), pastries, milk pails/cups/mugs etc., which were hand-selected by Rauch himself. Throughout the years there have been numerous variations on the theme of gourmet coffee - from single origin coffees from specific regions like Ethiopia or Java (where vanilla is used), through blends featuring different origins like Ethiopian Yirgacheffe or Guatemalan Altiplano Cerveza Machaca Paso Robles Blanco Fino). Kenmore is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. The site of Kenmore was first settled by Native Americans in the early 18th century. The first European to visit what is now Kenmore was Captain George Vancouver in 1792. The town began as a small cluster of log cabins on a bend in the Yakima River and grew rapidly due to its strategic location near seasonal watercourses and timber reserves. In 1858, the local gold rush led to a dramatic growth of Kenmore with people coming from all over America for gold discoveries. By 1870, nearly one-third of the population were foreign born and many businesses had been founded including several banks and hotels. The city proper developed slowly until World War II when military training camps sprang up around Puget Sound which required large numbers of civilian workers (Kenmore became an "industry city"). After 1945, jobs turned toward retailing, education and other services while downtown declined; today it remains largely residential but has some commercial activity such as an insurance company and two grocery stores
In 1881, the United States purchased the piece of land that would become Kenmore, Wash. It was part of a larger land purchase by the Washington Territory in 1853. The town was named after George Kenmore, an American entrepreneur and livestock raiser who came to live in Olympia in 1847. The first settlers were men from New York City and other northeastern states who arrived in small groups over the next few years. By 1885, there were over 100 people living in the town. In 1902, Kenmore became a city when it was incorporated as part of Seattle. In 1907, it amalgamated with nearby Lakewood to form the current city limits.
