One of the earliest shooters in Kelso was W. H. "Red" Saunders who opened his first gun shop in 1892. Saunders became one of the most successful and popular shooters in the area, and his shop is still a mainstay today. Other early shooters in Kelso were Prentice & Richardson, who opened their gun dealership on Fourth Street in 1896; A.J. Sheppard & Sons, who ran a rifle store on Second Street from 1897 to 1903; and Rufus Ewing, who operated a shotgun store on Third street from 1905 to 1907. In 1911, J.G. Sowers opened his own firearms store at Seventh Avenue and Pacific Highway which would become known as "Sowers's Gun Store". In the 1920s, Kelso began a period of growth with the opening of several new businesses including The Gun Shop at Fourth and Union streets (1928), The Pistol Place at Seventh Avenue and Pacific Highway (1929), The Shotgun Place at Ninth Avenue and Pacific Highway (1930), The Rifle Place at Tenth Avenue and Pacific Highway (1932), as well as two othergun stores-The Rifle Emporium at Eleventh Avenue and Pacific Highway (1935)and The Shotgun Emporium at Twelfth Avenue andPacific Highway(1936). During this time, Kelso also experienced its first homicide when Samuel Jernigan shot three men dead outside his home on North High Street in 1924. During World War II, many businesses closed or merged into others within the local community during that time period due to wartime demand for military goods however Kelso did not experience any significant economic decline until after war ended in 1945 when numerous small businesses reopened along with increased competition from agriculture products which had resumed following the war years boom times. Today, Kelso enjoys a vibrant economy with various business activity throughout its core areas including industry such as manufacturing munitions manufacture; retail sectors such as radio/television sales; transportation services including trucking service for goods transported between businesses located throughout town; restaurant/bar establishments serving up traditional American cuisine alongside international fare options; as well as some recent additions such as an adult entertainment club called "Kelsoville" which has been providing quality sexual activities since 2001

Today, Kelso is one of the most diverse towns in Washington State and is home to more than 12,000 residents. Its rich history has been extensively documented by local historians who have written extensively about both its early days and recent growth.
