Issaquah, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2010. Issaquah's history goes back to 1851 when it was named for John James Audubon. It became an incorporated town on January 1, 1907. The area that now makes up the city of Issaquah was first settled by Native Americans and the first European to arrive in what is now the city was John Stevens Emmons who built a trading post on the mudflats at Portage Bay in 1841. In 1870, George Custer fought his last battle at Issaquah Creek just outside town; his remains were never found. For many years after this event, it was believed that Custer had died here rather than at Little Bighorn Battlefield where he had been ordered to fight. However, with increasing evidence from excavations and gravesites around town as well as other sources confirming his death near Fort Washita on July 27th A.D.,1876 (near today's Yakima), it has finally been established that he did actually die here at Issaquah Creek battlefield during the famous Battle of Crazy Horse which helped end the Dakota War of 1862

Issaquah's namesake is Issaquah Creek and nearby Mount Rainier National Park. The first white settlers in what is now Issaquah arrived in 1855 and started cultivating land around present-day Issaqua Lake. In 1872, the government of Washington designated Mount Rainier as a national park and set aside land east of Issaquah for development into a city by combining residential neighborhoods on the east side with industrial areas to the west. In 1898, when Seattle was founded as an independent city, most of the eastern side ofIssaqua Lake was annexed intoSeattle while parts of western Issaqua were annexed into Tacoma. By 1970, most of downtownIssaquah had been built up within walking distance of various businesses and services including hospitals, shopping centers, parks and universities.
