Ferndale, Washington is home to one of the most significant coffee scenes in the nation. The city is known for its roasted coffee beans, and has been producing quality coffee for over a century. In addition to Ferndale's rich history, the city also offers a variety of cultural experiences that are perfect for people who love coffee. Ferndale was founded in 1887 by Nicholas Coles and his family. The Coles family operated a small grocery store in the town until they moved their business to what is now called Third Street and First Avenue. In 1915, John Broughman opened his first cafe in Ferndale and began serving Columbian roasts from his shop on Third Street. By 1925, Broughman had built a large café on Fourth Street which became known as The Lion's Head Coffee House. In 1951, Ferndale joined Puget Sound metropolitan area and became part of Seattle. This new location allowed for more exposure for local roasters and made it easier for customers to find quality coffee products. Over time, other Seattle-based roasters established themselves in Ferndale including Starbucks Coffee Company (1987), Peet's Coffee & Tea (1994), Häagen-Dazs USA Incorporated (1999), and Dutch Bros., Inc.(2005). Today, there are over 100 cafes located throughout the Ferndale community with more than 20 participating businesses making up Ithaca Roastery & Cafe Cooperative Ltd., which operates under the name "The Local". Ithaca Roastery & Cafe Cooperative Ltd.'s dedication to fresh roasted coffees continues today with two rotating original espresso machines capable of producing 8 cups per minute of delicious Italian-style espresso drinks served hot or cold with housemade pastries and HOUSE WAFFLES!

In 1862, Captain Edward Robinson discovered that when coffee is roasted slowly over an open flame it produces a stimulating flavor which leads to better drinking results. In 1917, Dutchman Hjalmar Schacht shared his discovery that cold pressing ( pressurized water) can give a high quality cup of coffee than any other method. When First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited Holland in 1951 she became familiar with this new way of roasting coffee and ordered some from the Dutch cafe Alkmaar on her trip around the world.
