Centralia, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. It was founded in 1854 by George Edmunds and James Weldon. The population was 1,300 at the 2000 census. Centralia is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Centralia was George Edmunds, who arrived in 1854 from Massachusetts. He built a log cabin on the site of what is now Centralia High School. Other early settlers included James Weldon, who arrived in 1855 and homesteaded land near what is now Lowman Avenue and First Street. By 1860, there were six families living in Centralia: four farmers, one miner, and one blacksmith. In 1861, Centralia became an incorporated town under the name of Tacoma. In 1872 it merged with King County to form the new county of King County. In 1904 it reverted to its original name of Tacoma again when King County was dissolved and re-created as a separate countyAgain in 1912 it reverted to its original name when Pierce County was created within King County (the current day Snohomish County). In 1916-17, during World War I, Centralia served as Headquarters for American Expeditionary Forces stationed in India (and later Burma) as part of General John J Pershing's "Pershing Plan". Most notably among centralians serving overseas were three brothers: Harry Emmons (1916-1918), Lloyd Emmons (1920-1924), and Everett W Emmons (1926-1930). During the war years many people left town for military service; however not all residents returned home after hostilities ended; some live still in centralIA today as retirees or tourists . Every family participated greatly both before breakfast on that morning and afterwards while they took their time getting ready for church services that afternoon; most people managed somehow to find time off work too... everyone seemed very much excited about this special event...it must have been quite something seeing all those familiar faces coming down your street...we had a bandstand set up just outside our door which we used to play music until late into the night if necessary; many people socialized over dinner at Marshall’s restaurant next door before going back inside for their evening prayers...all told it must have been a nice day indeed!
