The Coast Guard has been in Centralia, Washington since 1917. As the first federally funded coast guard service in the Northwest, the Coast Guard was created to provide law and order on the Puget Sound region. The force also responds to emergencies and assists local fire departments. The Coast Guard gift history can be traced back to 1917 when a group of businessmen formed the Centralia Volunteer Fire Department as a way to raise money for the new service. The department received its first equipment from donations from individuals or businesses. In 1912, it became part of what is now called Washington State Patrol and continued receiving donations until 1916 when it absorbed all other volunteer organizations within that agency. In 1916, Congress passed legislation providing for a national coast guard organization and within two years, Coast Guardsmen were stationed throughout America. On December 17th, 1917 Centralia Volunteer Fire Department was accepted into incorporation under charter number 9293 with Captain George Soper as head officer. This event marked an important change as centralia would become home to one of America’s most famous coastal defense zones; today’s Coast Guard Academy is located here. Since its inception, the Coastal Guard has responded to countless disasters including Hurricane Katrina (2005), Hurricane Irene (2011), Alaskan wildfires (2010-2013) and more recently Maria (2017). Many members of the Coast Guard have lost their lives during these events including Petty Officer 2nd Class Devin Howell who died after his boat capsized while rescuing people from a stormy beach in Puerto Rico in 2017 As we enter our seventh decade as a federally funded service in Western Washington, we continue to face challenges like climate change which threatens both our coasts but also our communities’ infrastructure . Centralia is an unincorporated community in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-based Centralia Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small farming community in 1882 and grew rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of its location on the northern edge of what is now Kittitas County and its access to timberlands. In 1915, Centralia became an incorporated municipality with a population of 575 residents. The town's economic prosperity declined in the early 21st century as a result of declines in logging and other agricultural activity. However, since 2010 Centralia has seen renewed growth as a result of newly developed businesses and new housing developments.
