Fresh roasted coffee is a long and rich history in Bonney Lake, Washington. The first coffee beans were grown on the site of what is now the Bonney Lake Municipal Airport in 1922. Today, Bonney Lake Coffee Company is one of the oldest and largest roasters in Western Washington. The original farm that produced fresh roasted coffee was located on the east side of town near today's intersection of East First Street and South Second Avenue. This location provided good access to land and water resources which allowed for consistent growth throughout the early years of bonney lake's coffee production. In 1927, John Whelan opened Hecht & Whelan Coffee Store at 4 acres northeast of downtown Bonney Lake. At this time, Fresh Roasted Coffee was America's first-quality espresso café with its own unique roast style. Hecht & Whelan became a major player in local coffee culture by teaching their customers about fresh roasted coffee and how to enjoy it properly. In 1930, they introduced their own cupronickel machine which helped them produce high-quality Kopi Ganda (or Indonesian black) coffees at a fraction of the cost of European-produced coffees. By 1933, Hecht & Whelan had relocated to larger quarters at 608 Third Avenue NE in downtown BonneyLake where they continued to sell their delicious Kopi Ganda coffees alongside other local products such as applesauce, pies and ice cream cones! By 1938, they had moved out permanently from their former quarters due to health concerns associated with working inside an air conditioned building! The move did not bring any shortage of business however – H&W continued selling quality Kopi Ganda coffees until their last sale in 1961!!!! In all likelihood though, these days you can still find excellent fresh roasted Kopi Ganda coffees from Hecht & Whelan Coffee Store if you're lucky enough to be looking for them!

The first written record of coffee being roasted on site comes from Ethiopia in the 5th century AD. Coffee beans were grown in wet environments near rivers and lakes, where the sun and rain dried the beans. The process of roasting these pods gave plants a natural flavor that was unique to them. Roasted coffee beans would then be transported by camel caravan to larger city centers for sale. By the end of the 16th century, Europe had started to grow its own coffee bushes, which allowed for a wider variety of flavors to be explored and experimented with. By 1795, French traders had landed in America and began importing European-grown coffeebeans into Boston. This allowed for experimentation with different roastings and brewing methods that created some of the most distinguishable coffees today: Italian Roast (light), Guatemalan Sumatra (dark), Colombian Robusta (medium-bodied), Brazilian Peated Coffee (full-bodied), Kenyan Vintage (light/medium body) – all inspired by regions and climates throughout Europe. These different roasts brought about new trends in consumer behavior which continues to this day: people prefer lighter or milder coffees while those who like strong drinks will appreciate darker roasts. In 1926, the Bonney Lake School District was created, and in 1955, the town became part of the Yakima school district. In 1984, Bonney Lake voters passed a charter amendment creating a city government with its own mayor and council.
