The United States Air Force (USAF) first established a military air arm in 1918 when the War Department created the Office of Air Service. The USAF was organized as an independent service on 9 Sep 1947 with the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which is now known as NASA. The USAF's first jets were purchased by the USAF in 1948. It was during this time that USAAF General Curtis LeMay designed and delivered America's first jet fighter aircraft, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning II. On 25 Jun 1954, President Dwight D Eisenhower announced plans forGeneral Curtis LeMay to become Commander-in-Chief of all American forces in Southeast Asia and lead USAFE in an aggressive campaign against Communist forces. In early 1955, after months of planning and negotiation, General Curtis LeMay became Commanding General of USAFE while still serving as USAF Chief of Staff. On 15 Jul 1957,the first operational jet training squadron was activated at Seymour Johnson AFB under the command of First Lt James E Hogg Jr..In 1958 USAF Headquarters moved from Washington D C to Auburn Army Air Field where it remained until its closure in 1961 due tobudgetary restraints within NATO. On 1 Dec 1961 Headquarters relocated back to Washington D C due to growing budget pressures within NATO but continued operations at Auburn AAF until 30 Apr 1967 when it was replaced by Headquarters United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE). Headed by Major General John W Hughes U S A AF commander stationed at RAF Mildenhall England from 3 Aug 1969 until his retirement on 31 Mar 1975; then Major General Floyd L Curry U S A AF Commander stationed at RAF Finningley England from 2 May 1975 until his retirement on 17 Oct 1977.) Up until disbanding HQ USAFE on 1 Feb 1978 all flying commands were located at bases across Continental United States except for one Base which was located at Creech AFB Nevada Joint Chiefs Operations Center (Joint Chiefs Ops Center). After disbanding HQ USAFE they were divided into four Bomber Commands: North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), Strategic Air Command (SAC), Tactical Air Command (TAC), andAir Defense Command(AMD). Auburn, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Auburn is located on the east side of Lake Union and is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. It falls within the Issaquah–Fremont– annexed area of Bellevue. The city was founded in 1851 by Latter-day Saints led by Brigham Young and named for General Robert E. Lee's old home in Virginia (now Richmond). After becoming an American territory in 1853, Auburn became part of what would become Seattle. In 1907, when Seattle's eastern boundary shifted westward to include Auburn along with most ofKing County south of Snohomish River, the city lost its status as a separate incorporated municipality but retained its name and boundaries until 1912 when it reincorporated as a town under state law. Auburn, Washington was founded in 1845 by Major General George Custer. It became a territory of the United States in 1889 and was named for Auburn, Alabama. The population of Auburn grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on the Puget Sound region and its importance as a transportation hub. By 1900, it had become one of America's most populous towns. However, during World War I Auburn's economy was greatly affected by the war effort, with many businesses closed or destroyed. After the war, the town struggled to recover and declined in popularity until the late 21st century when it regained some stability and began to experience growth again. Auburn is located at 47°21′N 112°03′W / 47.3283 N 112.1793 W / -112.03; its elevation is 553 feet (172 m). According to the 2010 census, Auburn has a population of 17,815 people living in 4,968 housing units. The racial makeup of Auburn is 91% white (non-Hispanic), 9% black or African American, 2% Native American/Alaska Native, 1% Asian/Pacific Islander, 1% from other races*, 0%,* less than 1%. As of 2000*, there were 11 same-sex married couples living together in 3 households*; no unmarried opposite-sex partnerships nor 13 same-sex married couples or individuals who cohabit without partners.* As of 2000*, there were 10 single parents with children under 18 living with them; 8 lived alone*). The first permanent settler in what would become Auburn arrived in 1845 after participating in Captain James Cook's exploration of Puget Sound region which includes today's Seattle area. Upon his return home he reported finding "a good site for a settlement" on land purchased from Shoshone Indians near present day Tacoma*. In November 1846 Commodore John Dennys sailed his squadron upriver from Montrose Point to lay claim to what would become eastern Washington Territory but only reached about 12 miles upriver before running into shoals*. On December 12th Commodore Dennys set out again only this time he made contact with an aboriginal group known as Tlingit tribe led by Chief Josephatah* (*Denny recognized that this tribe posed no threat so he ordered his men not to fire upon them). After successfully concluding negotiations with Chief Josephatah and obtaining permission from Alexander Mackenzie*, Dennys named his new post "Auburn" after Henry Clay Frémont who had just won fame leading an expedition through Oregonland†† *. With this new name came new expectations that it be a thriving trading center(*). The area around present day Auburn was still mostly forested until 1850 when clearing started along several streams which eventually allowed development along these routes(*). In 1870–71 large tracts including much of present day downtown were developed along three major streets: First Avenue South between Pine Street and Second Avenue North; Fourth Avenue North between Everett Street and White River Boulevard; Third Avenue South between White River Boulevard and Navy Yard Road * (*This map is courtesy http://www2Primary Documents1._ustmgfw2_congressionaldocuments_2sep09_.pdf ). In 1890–91 newly designated Seattle County was established within Puget Sound Territory following elections held on December 15th)* (*Accordingly all former Indian reservations throughout Washington became part of Seattle County)‡† *. Overall since 1830 there have been over 20 occupations recorded at various points within Auburn community*. In 1949 construction began on what would become Kingdome Stadium which helped revive downtown business activity while helping give rise to today's south side district(*). This stadium remains oneofthe most popular tourist destinations in town today*.
