Arlington, Washington is an incorporated city in the northeastern U.S., on the border of Virginia and Oregon. As of the 2010 census, its population was 63,394 The site that would become Arlington was first settled by Europeans in 1792 as part of Clallam County, Washington. The town of Arlington was created in 1851 when eastern Fairfax County was detached from Clallam County and merged into Arlington Township. For many years it functioned as a separate municipality with its own government and school system. In 1872, Arlington incorporation became a state constitutional amendment and the town became a part of the new state. The City-County merger took place in 1958 and all services within the City were discontinued; however, most functions for residents still continued within Arlington Township. The early history of Arlington is commemorated by two landmarks: The George Washington Bridge which spans I-495 between Maryland Heights (near present-day Alexandria) and Rosslyn over the Potomac River to connect Northern Virginia with Southern Maryland; and McLean House at 7th Street NW – now home to Gallery Row– which served as President James K. Polk’s official residence from 1849 to 1853, during his time as Secretary of War under Franklin D. Roosevelt.
