Winchester, Virginia, is a small town in Culpeper County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,541 at the 2010 census. Winchester's name comes from William Henry Winchester who settled there in 1782 and built his first settler's cabin on what is now called West Main Street. In 1802, he married Lydia Barnes and founded the present day town of Winchester on land he purchased from James Smith for $1 In 1814, two years after his wife's death,William Henry Winchester Jr., founded the White House of VA (now known as the Office of Veterans Affairs) here in what is now downtown Winchester. He served as its first director until his death in 1828. The house still stands today and is used as a local government office building today

The community was named after Winchester's birthplace, also in Loudoun County, England. At the time of its establishment, it consisted of a small family plot of land and a single house. In 1881, the population of Winchester was 514 people living in 45 houses. By 1920 the population had decreased to 261 people living in 25 houses with an average household size of 2.06 persons. In 1980 there were still 241 residents living in 25 houses but the average household size had increased to 3.01 persons
