The Navy has been deployed in Williamsburg since the early 1800s. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard constructed a number of warships for the Virginia fleet, and as the navy grew, so too did its gift history in this community. In 1814, Admiral John Roberts commissioned USS Constitution into the navy. This was the first ship to be built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The ship was very popular with the sailors and was highly esteemed by them. She served throughout the War of 1812 and saw action against Canada. In 1815, Constitution successfully defended Hampton Roads from an attack by Spanish ships. She went on to serve in other campaigns during that conflict including Puerto Rico and occupation of Cuba. USS Constitution Museum is located in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where she was preserved until her decommissioning in 1922. today she is one of only six operational warships still afloat (the others being USS Enterprise (CVN-64), USS John F Kennedy (CVN-8), USS Nimitz (CVN-68), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-8), and USS George Washington (CVA-7)).
