Williamsburg is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 14,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's history dates back to 1607 when English colonists arrived in present-day Williamsburg and founded a small settlement named Fort George on York River. In 1746, after Dunmore's War, the British withdrew from Virginia and took up residence in Maryland. On July 24, 1776, with the declaration of independence by America’s founders and leading military figures including General George Washington and Admiral John Paul Jones, Williamsburg became an important naval yard for supplying American forces during the Revolutionary War. After the war ended in 1783, Williamsburg grew rapidly as a center for education and business development. During this time, it also built Stonewall Jackson's home at Montpelier Street and began construction on what would become known as Independence Hall – now parts of both Historic Freedom Tower (now National Museum of American History) and Ulysses S Grant Park (now President’s Park). In 1871, following Reconstruction-era legislations that favored black Americans over whites, Williamsburg reverted to white rule under Confederate occupation until November 12th 1865 when Union troops burned down what had been its white commercial buildings including its Blacksmith Shop at Powell Pointe to end Reconstruction. With increasing African American migration into local communities during postwar times – especially after World War II – racial discrimination against African Americans effectively stopped within Williamsburg limits until 1965 when integration finally occurred there generally throughout all public institutions operated by local government entities although some exceptions continue today such as City Council meetings which are still open to all citizens regardless of race or color although live streaming is not allowed).
