The first coffee beans were roasted in what is now Williamsburg, Virginia in 1794. The first espresso machine was invented by Angelo Alessi in 1819 and it was used to roast coffee for the Italian army. In 1847, two Dutchmen, Cornelis Jansz and Pieter Bakelants started a small store on Beale Street in Williamsburg that became known as the Coffee House. They sold coffee, bread and other goods from their shop until 1865 when they moved to 14th Street and Columbia Avenue. In 1893, General James Longstreet bought the Coffee House from Cornelis Jansz and changed its name to The White Horse Inn. It served as a headquarters of Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war, The White Horse Inn became a restaurant where people could enjoy fine cuisine while giving support to the Confederacy. In 1951, it was acquired by Harry Thomas who renamed it Harry's Place and continued to serve fine fare until he died in 1978. In 1984, it reverted back to its original name of The White Horse Inn. Through all of these changes and acquisitions over time, The White Horse Inn has become one of Williamsburg’s most popular tourist destinations for both locals and visitors alike!

Williamsburg is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 14,801 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Virginia after Petersburg and makes up 8.8% of the state's total population. Williamsburg is located on the James River about 50 miles (80 km) east of Richmond and 20 miles (32 km) west of Norfolk, both large metropolitan areas. The town has been a center for trade and industry since its founding by English colonists in 1752 as an agricultural community on Catawba Island within present-day Richmond County. Williamsburg became an important transportation hub during the American Revolution because its location made it a strategic point between British forces based in London and rebel forces operating along the eastern seaboard. After skirmishes at Yorktown Heights and Moneta Court House, General George Washington landed his army near Williamsburg on July 11,1781 to launch an assault against British troops entrenched at Yorktown Heights. By September 1781, however, British forces had withdrawn from Yorktown Heights and Williamsburg became one of four towns in Virginia to remain under Patriot control until Crown Prince Cornwallis surrendered them to Britain two years later at Saratoga Springs. In 1814, Confederate General Robert Ewell established himself as president of Confederate commander Jefferson Davis' old home called "Almighty Jones" on what would become known as Albermarle Avenue in downtown Williamsburg; Davis left his office there to lead Confederate armies out onto Appomattox Court House battlefield where he was killed three days later. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant occupied nearby Petersburg during their failed attempt to capture Richmond following the battle of Gettysburg; many residents fled into surrounding rural counties when Union artillery shelling began shortly after 4 p.m.; more than 1 million people lived within five miles (8 km) of Petersburg when it was destroyed by fire that day alone according to contemporary estimates The Town Hall building located on Broad Street across from King's Chapel was built c 1830 with bricks donated by local farmers who were affected by Middleton's Rebellion which ousted Richard Middleton from power over them In 1838 Isaac Niles moved his family from Concord Township (now Spotsylvania County) Pennsylvania to Williamsburgh due to floods that inundated their farmsteads there & founded Niles Iron Works here producing wagon frames
Williamsburg was founded by the Virginian Company in 1775 as a trading post on the James River. The company became an English Crown colony in 1619 and was renamed as Virginia in 1624. Williamsburg served as the capital of Virginia from 1785 until 1847. The city was destroyed by fire in 1898, but rebuilt and reopened as a continuously growing cultural and commercial center. In 2007, Williamsburg was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
