The town was destroyed by Confederate troops two years later during what is known as Battle of Gettysburg; however, many residents managed to flee beforeliction could take place. After the war ended in 1865, WaynesborougH continued to grow; by 1924 it had reached its current size with over 1,500 residents.WPA2 - "Waynesboro: A timeline (1824-1924)" Although waylesboroughH declined after World War II due to economic reasons such as lack of population growth or competition from other communities within Caroline County (such as Radford), it has since undergone significant revitalization thanks to various efforts spearheaded by local officials over recent decades (including Measure R which passed in 2010). This revitalization has included new development such as retail space along Interstate 95A north of downtown and new cultural attractions like The Pavilion at Glenwood Springs that have attracted major tourist traffic. At present day there are more than 2,000 residents residing withinWaylesborough limits.

In 1923-1924, Waynesboro hosted the Virginia Woolf Festival which is considered one of its most successful events ever. From 1925-1926, Waynesboro also hosted a world fair which attracted many visitors from all over America and Europe
