Waynesboro is a small town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, located in Prince William County. The population was 5,543 at the 2000 census. Waynesboro is the most populous incorporated community in Prince William County and second-most populous municipality in the county. The Town of Waynesboro was first settled in 1788 by English colonists who named it after Colonel John Waynes, an officer in Lord Cornwallis's army who had served during the American Revolution. The town site was purchased from Indians by Nicholas Culpepper and his wife Elizabeth Culpepper on March 25, 1790. The Culpeppers were landowning Virginians and early settlers around Waynesboro developed into a prosperous community with three churches, a millinery shop, two stores, a blacksmith shop, four schools (one public and three private), six farms (four large and two small), one or two dozen slaves, and several hundred acres of woodland. In 1811 Waynesboro became part of Botetourt County when that area was divided between Fairfax and Botetourt counties. It remained part of Botetourt until 1813 when it became part of Prince William County as its separate township. In 1800 population figures for Prince William County are not extant but according to US Census Bureau data for2000 there were 5,543 people living within its boundaries including 3997 households which makes it second most populous municipality within Prince William County behind only Alexandria

Waynesboro was founded in 1755 as a small trading post on the James River by Colonel John Waynes. The first store and later the courthouse were built here. The town grew rapidly following the opening of the National Road in 1800, and by 1820 it had over 100 residents. In 1827, Waynesboro became an incorporated town, and itsSTONEWOODS (now part of Eastern Virginia University) were built in honor of President James K. Polk. Major industries in Waynesboro during this time included textile manufacturing and meatpacking. By 1930, however, the growth of suburbia had begun to take hold, and by 1940 only a few hundred people lived in Waynesboro proper. However, because of its close proximity to major population centers such as Norfolk and Petersburg, Waynesboro continued to thrive through the years until it finally ceased operations on July 1st, 2008.
