The Marine Corps Deployed gift history in Waynesboro, Virginia began on December 7, 1941 when the Marine Barracks at Quantico, Virginia became the first marine barracks to be used by the Marines. The barracks housed 1st Battalion, 9th Marines and 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines. The battalion was activated at Quantico on October 15, 1941 and served with distinction during World War II. During their service time in Quantico they received many awards including two Presidential Unit Citations (PUC) and four Battle Stars. On October 15, 1942 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines moved from Quantico to Fort Story in Petersburg VA for training under the command of Colonel John Waddell. They were stationed there until May 1945 when they departed for Okinawa where they served as part of Task Force 58 under General Douglas MacArthur. There they earned five battle stars and a Purple Heart. Upon their return to Japan they were redesignated 2nd Battalion 9th Marines and attached to 4th Marine Division which fought in Okinawa until September 1945 when they sailed back home via Pearl Harbor arriving in San Diego California on September 27 1945. Upon their return home 2nd Battalion 9th Marines was reassigned to Camp Pendleton CA where it operated as part of 1st Marine Regiment until it was disbanded on January 1st 1946 due to reductions in the Marine Corps due to World War II budget cuts. That same day 2nd Battalion 9th Marines received orders disbanding them effective immediately upon receipt of these orders so that units could be more efficiently deployed across the Pacific Theater into conflicts such as Korea and Vietnam where they would serve with distinction against an ever changing enemy schedule. After disbanding 2nd/9th marines took up residence at Camp Pendleton where it conducts ceremonies honoring its members who have passed away since its establishment or have been transferred out of country for various deployments including Iraq and Afghanistan currently conducting combat operations against ISIS militants located within Afghanistan’s borders

Waynesboro, located in Fauquier County, Virginia, is the largest town in the county and the seat of Waynesboro Township. The population was 8,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke–Chandler metropolitan area. The first settler in Waynesboro was George Washington who arrived there in 1775 on a journey to Lexington to support the Patriot cause. The town was founded by Captain John Nicholson in 1800. In 1802 it became part of Fauquier County and incorporated as a village. The post office was established at Waynesboro in 1814 and remained open until it closed on July 1, 1899. Waynesboro had a telegraph line from Roanoke to Charlottesville starting on October 25, 1859; however, this line failed due to heavy rains during construction. In 1861 Waynesboro played host to Confederate General Robert Ewell's " Valley Forge" encampment during the American Civil War. After Union forces captured Richmond on April 12th 1865, General Joseph Hooker ordered his army into Fairfax County for an encirclement campaign against Pickett's Charge that failed miserably. In 1872 Waynesboro built its first schoolhouse which remains standing today as one of its most prominent landmarks.
