In 1897, John Peet passed away and his son, Harry died suddenly young from pneumonia – leaving behind an entire family of coffee farmers who continued operations under the guidance of their father’s widow until her death in 1951. Waynesboro is a town in Buchanan County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waynesboro was founded in 1792 by Captain John Waynes and his wife Judith Crafts as an independent settlement on the Rappahannock River near present-day Strasburg. In 1800, Waynesboro became part of Fairfax County and then Virginia in 1802. In 1825, Waynesboro became a town and was named for General George Washington's father-in-law Colonel James Ghent. The town had its start when Captain John Waynes located a homeable spot on the Rappahannock River in 1792. He married Judith Crafts, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel William Crafts of Winchester County, Virginia, in that year. The couple built their first house there and started to trade goods with other settlers on the riverbank nearby. By 1800, they had four children: John (1791–1857), Susanna (1793–1868), Samuel (1800–1863), James (1800–1836). One hundred years later, descendants of those original families still live in Waynesboro Valley along with others who have settled there over time including Stewart brothers from Scotland who arrived around 1865; Luther Woods from North Carolina; Harry Nibley from Utah;[1] brothers Fenton & Franklin Kelley from Illinois; Carleton Watkins from Kentucky;[2]and many more arriving during the late 19th century throughout what is now Buchanan and Roanoke Counties.[3] In 1825,CaptainJohnWaynee movedthe family to their current location east of Strasburg on the banks of the Rappahannock River which he called "Winstown". There he established two stores and began trading goods with neighboring settlements including Harrisonburg to the west and Fredericksburg to the east while also founding a school which served as grades one through twelve until it closed in 1851 due to funding shortages caused by warring states involvement.[4][5][6][7][8] During this time period many roads were constructed through what are now parts of Roanoke County such as Intersection Road which runs concurrently along both sides of Main Street between Harrisonburg Junction Road and Winchester Court House before splitting off into northbound lanes for route 260 southwestward concurrent with Route 5 across White Oak Swamp before rejoining Main Street at Strasbourg turning northwestward towards Fredericksburg where it crossed into Maryland just south of Colts Neck Bridge thence continuing southeastward past Blacks Point Light into Virginia state line at Weldon Spring [9]. This community continued functioning until discontinued due to lack of funds circa 1860 when land adjacent to Intersection Road became available for erection of new buildings following surveying completed by Major General Edmund Randolph Johnston commanding XVIII Corps during Shenandoah Campaign thereby terminating any remaining local businesses operation therein numbering only six residents out o' thirteen total prior thereto including Captains John Ways [10], Jeremiah Newcomb [11],[12],[13],[14]; Isaac Henson Sr., Late President James Witherspoon’s brother-in-law[15]; Captain Lewis Vaughn [16]; Rev Dr Elisha Swayne,[17], Reverend Edwin Cawson’s assistant pastorat Christ Episcopal Church who died young unmarried during Reconstruction days after serving several terms as vestryman/deaconess for that church since 1855 until his death aged seventy five yeares old December 31st 1888 having officiated over 1125 services therein all bearing date back to 1850 inclusive no event taking place without his consent or permission leastwise not hereinbefore mentioned save only such matters hereininafter set out . . . The town grew rapidly thanks to its strategic location at the junction of three rivers, and it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad.
