It is part of the Washington metropolitan area. The community was founded by George Waynes in 1809 andnamed for General James Longstreet, who helped lead Virginias Union army during the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1810, and the first store was built in 1813. In 1824, Waynesboro became an incorporated town. In 1910, Waynesboro had a population of 12 people; it increased to 20 people by 1920. In 1940, the population reached 42 people; it decreased to 11 people by 1970. However, it has continued to grow since then and now has a population of 10,912 as of 2010

Waynesboro is a town in Shenandoah County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro is the only incorporated town in Shenandoah County. It is located on the north side of the Shenandoah River and east of Lexington, Kentucky. The first Europeans to visit Waynesboro were Frenchmen who arrived in 1609 and called it "Beaufortville". In 1740, Colonel James Craig moved his forces from Winchester to establish a post here after defeating the British at Dunmore's Battle. Waynesboro was named for General David Wayne who fought in that battle. The first store was built here by Isaac Day in 1814. In 1819, John Hays established what became known as Hays tobacco company which grew into one of the leading tobacco companies in America. By 1865, most of Waynesboro had been destroyed by fires caused by burning crops during an agricultural depression caused by World War II shortages of munitions. The destruction did not stop there though; many homes and businesses were completely burned down or suffered severe damage including: day's store (now part of Walmart), Ford's garage (now home to Nolen Hardware), Hays tobacco warehouse (now occupied by IHOP), Smith & Wesson arms factory (now occupied by JBL) and much more! A few weeks later on October 10th some local veterans went door-to-door offering food to anyone who would let them inside their homes so that they could rebuild their lives! On October 14th President Franklin D Roosevelt made an appearance at Hays tobacco company where he praised the men and women who had rebuilt their lives since war ended! After returning home from his trip he ordered all American businesses back into business! This event helped start what has become known as 'the period of reconstruction'. After World War II Waynesboro experienced growth with new development such as: Roanoke Shopping Center opened up near downtown in 1951formerly anchored by Sears department storesand two other shopping centers followed soon afterwards: Gateway Shopping Center which opened up just north of Route 6 between Interstate 81 and Route 63 in 1957and finally Wharf Landing Mall whichopened up along riverside adjacent to Roanoke Shopping Center in 1984which replaced Gateway Shopping Center as the primary destination for shoppers within walking distanceof each other!. Additionally many small businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores while larger firms flourished; this included several major corporations such as IBM, Monsanto, Coca Cola etc.; these firms left behind large footprints throughout our town fabricating memories that are still recalled today such as GEICO’s former building right next to Walmart!, UPS’s former truck lot across from FedExField!, Papa John’s Pizza’s old parking lot on Old US 301 just south ofRoute 6And even present day Macy’s & Sears have left their mark on our community with numerous projects suchasMethodist Church being constructed across from Walmart!), wayne's drive thru restaurant now open 24/7 inside FedEx Field! Today Waynesboro continues its growth with additions suchas Stonington Landing housing project completedin 2013that will add about 800 jobs directly onto Main Street!! And last but not least Greenbrier Resort Spa has agreed to lease land next doorto WHarf LandingMall allowing residents accessto 12 pools&spa&waterpark plus indoor golf course!!!
