The Waynesboro Coast Guard Station was first established in 1892. The present station is located on the James River near the town of Waynesboro. The station provides maritime services to the community and conducts research and development for coastal safety programs. In addition, the station offers a variety of educational opportunities for residents and visitors. One of the first gifts received from the Waynesboro Coast Guard Station was a camera. This gift was given to the station by Mr. John Haines of Norfolk, Virginia in 1912. From this camera, photography became an important part of Coast Guard life in Waynesboro. In 1954, a radar system was donated by Raytheon Company. This donation allowed Coast Guard personnel to do more patrols along our coastline. Radar has also been used in Disaster response efforts such as Hurricane Ivan in 2005 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Today, we continue to provide lifesaving service with our vessels and equipment including: rescue helicopters; lifeboats;and an Incident Command System that allows us to communicate with other agencies during emergencies or disasters

The Waynesboro Coast Guard Station was established in 1916 as the first coast guard station on the Virginia Peninsula. The station served as a base of operations for the Charlottesville, Virginia-based First Coast Guard District. In 1917, the district was merged into the Norfolk, Virginia-based Fourth Coast Guard District and the Waynesboro station became part of that district. In 1951, the Fourth Coast Guard District was renamedthe Delmarva Shoreguard District and the Waynesboro station became part of that division. On 1 January 1972,the Delmarva Shoreguard District was disbanded and all shoreguard stations were placed under jurisdiction ofthe Hampton Roads Division ofthe National Security Agency. The Waynesboro coast guard station continued to be operated by the Hampton Roads Division until its closure in 2006.
Waynesboro is a small town in Frederick County, Virginia. The population was 2,691 at the 2000 census. Waynesboro is located on the Susquehanna River, about west of Washington, D.C. In 1838, it was founded by Colonel John Fenton as a camp for his militia forces during the Second Seminole War. It became an incorporated town in 1903. The Susquehanna River forms the eastern border of Waynesboro and its downtown area is surrounded by fields that are home to many types of crops and animals such as cows, pigs, horses and poultry. There are also several businesses located in downtown Waynesboro including two banks and a large grocery store which has been in business since 1907. The Main Street Bridge crossing the Susquehanna river links Waynesboro with neighboring towns like Kingman and more distant locations such as Lebanon and Centreville to the south and east respectively. Waynesboro is known for its annual "Festival of Flowers" which takes place during early April each year in downtown area where vendors sell flowers from local gardens as well as other items related to floral artistry such as pottery or jewelry making along with food cooked over open fires from local hearthsides. Many people from nearby jurisdictions attend this event which features music competition among various artists as well as contests featuring everything from lawn games to pie eating contests (the latter being particularly popular).

On July 1, 1871, the city of Frederick merged with Waynesboro. Today, Waynesboro is a small but thriving community located just outside of Fredericksburg. Its rich history has been documented through numerous artifacts and photos dating back to the 1800s.
Waynesboro was founded in 1752 by Captain John Waynes. The town is named for General George Washington and his wife Martha, who died in 1799. Waynesboro grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War, and was renamed Alexandria after the large city in Virginia. After the war, Alexandria became a center of trade and culture, while Waynesboro stagnated. In 1801, Alexander McDowell moved his family to Waynesboro from Fredericksburg. The town's population exploded during the early 1800s as farmers migrated to the area to grow crops. By 1810, Waynesboro had a population of more than 2,000 people. In 1836, voters approved a charter allowing for shops and businesses within the town limits. The following year, Waynesboro become an incorporated community with a government that included a mayor and five trustees. In 1847, Democratic Gov. Edmund Randolph appointed Jethro Coffin as its first mayor. Between 1850 and 1860, Waynesboro experienced rapid growth thanks to new construction projects such as schools and medical facilities. However, due to conflict between whitesmiths and farmers over job opportunities and taxation rates, many of these projects were either slow or halted altogether during this time period; this led to increased poverty and social unrest in the town during these years."
