Waynesboro was founded in 1749 by James Waynes and his wife Hannah. The town was named for Colonel John Waynes, who had been a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly in 1735. The Waynesons were the first white population in what is now Waynesboro County. They built the first house on Main Street in 1753. The town grew quickly, and by 1811 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1814, the town voted to secede from Virginia and become an independent state called West Virginia. By 1830, however, the town had shrunk to its original size and ceased to exist as a result of increasing violence and poverty. The history of Waynesboro is unique because it contains both its earliest known settlers (the Waynesons) as well as one of the most significant moments in its history - when it became part of West Virginia. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Waynesboro rejoined Virginia after being ceded to South Carolina as part of that state's Union army. However, due to increased violence within Virginian society at this time – including reports of massive slave seizures – Governor Troup ordered local militia forces to investigate ways to quell any unrest that may have arisen from re-joiningVirginia; this led ultimately to thetown's incorporation into West Virginia on January 6th, 1861 . Since then, much has changed about Waynesboro: It became an important center for education and commerce during West Virginia's recent industrialization; it experienced some high-profile tragedies such as the 1995 shooting death of Senator Robert Byrd; and most recently it has seen steady growth with growing populations and businesses accessing its many cultural amenities such as art galleries and nightlife options.
