The air force came to Waynesboro when the United States acquired it as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. When America entered World War I, Waynesboro became an important military base because of its location on Route 26. The air force played a major role in the war, providing fighter planes and bombers to help fight against Germany and Japan. After World War II, the air force left Waynesboro but kept some of its equipment here. In 1957, the air force donated a new helicopter to Waynesboro Airport. This helicopter is still used today by the air force and is considered one of the most famous pieces of aviation history in Waynesboro.

Waynesboro is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Washington D.C. and 40 miles (64 km) west of Roanoke. It lies on the Potomac River and is bordered by Botetourt County to the north and Fairfax County to the south. The first European settlers in Waynesboro were Englishmen who migrated from Dorchester, England in 1695. They named their new community after George Washington, then America's first president and future generalissimo of the United States Army during the Revolutionary War. During that time, several businesses such as Wawa-Hoover's Store, First National Bank & Trust Company, Ford Motor Company, Coca Cola Bottling plant etc., developed along with many homes being erected or renovated including many belonging to current residents such as Mr./Mrs./Ms.: Smith/Jones/Kerridge etcetera

"From 1941 through 1945," continued Cavanaugh-Thompson "the USAAF gave cigars as a gesture of goodwill following World War II." This was especially true given that Japanese cigar manufacturers had collaborated with Nazi Germany throughout the warring conflict! From 1951 until 1971 - when North Korea became an ally of America - gifts were sent directly from America's Embassy in Seoul! This unique gifting trend continued into modern times; however it wasn't until 1998 that a shipment of bottled water was sent direct from American Forces Command (AFC) Headquarters Panama City Beach California!"
