Third, coffee became very popular in Viennese society during the Napoleonic Wars due to its neutrality policy.4 Additionally, Emperor Franz Joseph I occasionally drank Turkish Coffee from his private cuproom at Hofburg Palace while he resided in Vienna mayor Johann Strauss Daimler's house on Auberginenstrasse #3 across from Stock Exchange Square (now Republic Square).5 Finally,Vienna's position as capital of Austria made it an important center for trade during this period.

There is no one way to describe the history of artisan coffee. The beans that are roasted and brewed in small batches by small-time farmers and cafe owners have been part of the American culture for over a century. The first recorded mention of coffee being roasted and brewed in small quantities comes from an article written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1819, which described how John Adams was roasting his own coffee at his home. Coffee wasn't mentioned again until 1870, when a German traveler named Johann Friedrich Berthold wrote about "the noble art of roast[ing] beans." Coffee started to be popularized as an afternoon pick-me-up in the early 1800s. Merchants started selling coffee grounds and cups made from paper or leather straps with metal handles, which gave people a sense of luxury while enjoying their morning caffeine fix.
