Suffolk, Virginia is a census-designated place (CDP) in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. Suffolk is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Ft. Worth, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Suffolk was founded in 1785 by British colonists from Ipswich in Suffolk, England and named for General James Kenedy who helped lead the British forces during the American Revolution. The town continued to be called Ipswich until 1881 when it became part of Prince Edward County as part of a realignment of counties in Virginia following the American Civil War. "Suffolk" appears on two maps made during Confederation and it was known as "Nappanee". In 1786 Captain John Smith discovered a bay on the north shore of present-day Suffolk which he named Nappaquid because his group had difficulty finding freshwater there. By 1800 Nappaquid had become an important trading post and local merchants developed multiple businesses including coal mines and lumber mills along its shores. In 1805 George Washington visited Ipswich and noted that "the people hereabouts are all friendly." In 1853 Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne bought 7 acres (2 hectares) east of today's downtown for $10 to start development of what would later become Hawthorne House National Historic Site honoring America's pioneer author/writer/educator/. After many years with little progress, Hawthorne sold his interest in 1850 to Major General Edmund Kirby Smith who moved his family into what would eventually be known as Kirby House before founding Petersburg College in 1860.. In honor of General Robert Ewell Price whose unit fought at Battle Courtemanche some miles southeast of present day Kirby House on Apr 3rd 1865 Price's monument still stands today just outside town limits looking out over Fort Monroe State Park!
