The National Guard in Suffolk, Virginia has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The first unit organized in Suffolk was the 1st Suffolk Regiment of Militia on September 8, 1775. This regiment fought at Saratoga and Yorktown and earned their nickname, "The Patriots." In 1881, the Guardsmen were redesignated as the 7th Virginia Infantry Regiment and served during Reconstruction in South Carolina and Georgia. In 1946, the Guardsmen were re-designated as the 9th Virginia Infantry Regiment and served in Vietnam. Upon its return home, they were consolidated with other state Army units to form the present day National Guard of Virginia. The 9th VIR was activated on July 14, 1949 at Petersburg Barracks under command of Headquarters Department Headquarters Troop A (HHDTA) which also included Company C (1/9 VIR), Company E (3/7 VIR), Battalion I (4/10 VRT), Battalion II (2/15 VRT) and two detachments from Battery KA (5/8 ARVN). On October 15th HHDTA relieved Battery KA from service for training purposes only. During World War II there had been three separate batteries here:Battery KA(5/8 ARVN) - built by General George Armstrong Custer's 4th Cavalry Brigade; Battery LY(4/10 VRT) - battery formed December 10 1922 from part of 2nd battalion 5th artillery peninsula Artillery; Battery KE(2/15 VRT) - battery formed February 15 1944 from part of 3rd battalion 9th artillery brigade Artillery whose gunnery school was located at Fordstown Plantation near Richmond. On November 12 1947 an act authorizing organization and equipment of a provisional guard unit was passed by both houses of Congress with passage Senate 114-0 while House Bill No 337 died in committee without amendment because it did not include an appropriation for this purpose. The provisional guard unit was designated as Company D aka "the Red Coats" due to its color scheme being similar that worn by U.S Marines during World War II when companies A thru F were white with red sleeves while company G wore green instead Company D arrived at Norfolk Naval Shipyard on December 2nd 1945 where they received new Manned Maneuvering Unit Equipment including M60 machineguns, addition P90 pistols which replaced revolvers issued to original members who had left for World War II . On January 16 1946 all troops mustered out except those assigned to Combat Service Support Units or National Guard Reserves duty outside Virginias borders including those manning Fort Meade Maryland until termination date .

Suffolk, Virginia is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Norfolk–Norfolk metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1634 as Hingham by Pilgrims who came from England on their ship "Mayflower". In 1793, General James Robertson's brigade attacked a force of British forces at Bunker Hill while they were besieging Portsmouth. The town was renamed Suffolk after Castle Howard in Cheshire County, England. During World War II Suffolk had one of the largest concentrations of American troops in any military installation within Britain; its many factories produced munitions for both Allied and Axis forces. After hostilities ceased in 1945, many manufacturing jobs moved out of Suffolk into other areas during what has been called "the post-war boom." However some new businesses have started up since then such as tourism which has helped to revive local economy. The current mayor is Donnie Green

This change also affected the name: when Prince William County was organized, it reverted back to its original name - Suffolk - but because Norfolk County continued to be called "Virginia" by virtue of being within the borders of England, this name continued to be used until 1881 whenPrince George's and Norfolk Counties were merged into one single government entity under the new name "Virginia".
