By 1642, English colonists had established a small town called Southampton on the tidal shoreline of James River. In 1795, following the Treaty of Paris ending the French-American War, Southampton became part of Great Britain as part of the newly formed United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. For most of its history, Suffolk has been a heavily industrialized region with a long history of heavy reliance on manufacturing jobs. However, since World War II there have been several notable changes taking place in this area: First, Suffolk has become more suburbanized as people have moved away from downtown areas; Second, local government has grown more decentralized; Finally, there is now growing interest in development within Suffolk’s traditional rural areas
Suffolk, Virginia is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, located in Wythe County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 14,854. The town is bordered by Prince William County to the south and east, Fairfax County to the north and west, and Suffolk University to the northwest. It lies on a sloping plain that covers most of eastern Powhatan County. The first people who lived in Suffolk were farmers who arrived from England in the late 17th century. They built cabins along a stream called Bull Run Creek and began growing corn, wheat, beans, potatoes and other vegetables. In 1802, they built a sawmill on Bulls Run Creek so they could produce lumber for building homes and fences. By 1890, however, their economy had changed because of changes in transportation methods and industry. Lumber became less important as horse-drawn cars replaced wagons for carrying goods around communities such as Norfolk; instead Suffolk developed into an agricultural community with poultry production becoming very important after settlers found rice fields thereabouts. In 1916 local officials founded Suffolk University which became one of America's leading universities before merging with Radcliffe College in Cambridge Massachusetts two years later In 1942 during World War II when American forces invaded Japan through bases at Okinawa and Iwo Jima airfields (later known as Lingayen Gulf), many Americans living nearby decided to flee Boston for rural areas inland due to bombings that were happening all over Japan including Hiroshima Both men from Hampton Roads area enlisted with American forces shortly after Pearl Harbor However only 2% of men serving died duringWWII while others received Purple Hearts or Bronze Stars . Most men who fought did not receive any recognition like those from Hampton Roads area
