Suffolk County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,715. Its name comes from the English county of Suffolk and its original capital, Ipswich. The county's center is at Suffolk City, which is also its largest city. The first permanent settlers arrived in what is now Suffolk County in 1614 when Captain John Smith and his party explored the Virginia Peninsula on their ill-fated journey from England to find a new home for Christian missionaries. In 1776, during the American Revolution, skirmishes were fought between British regulars and Patriot militia near Ipswich while General George Washington was besieging Yorktown. The battle that ensued left many British soldiers dead or captured and made Suffolk an integral part of America’s military effort against Great Britain. After independence was gained, much of what is now Suffolk County (except for some rural areas) came under control of the new nation as part of the Virginia Colony Extension Act (27 U.S.C.) It wasn’t until after World War II that portions of eastern Norfolk and western Sussex counties became part of Suffolk County proper; however most residents continue to identify with their respective counties throughout their lives. In 2008, then-Governor Bob McDonnell proposed changes to how voting districts are drawn inVirginia based on population shifts within individual counties over time – one result would have been that much smaller Essex County would have become part of neighboring Hampshire County despite its relatively small population size (less than 10,000 people). Despite strenuous resistance by local officials and Republican lawmakers who felt they had been wronged by McDonnell’s plan, it passed both chambers with only gentle criticism from Governor Terry McAuliffe – a Democrat – following signature by Secretary of State Ralph Northam in March 2009 . Norfolk resident Jill Harth said she never saw her community change hands like this before without her consent or involvement; she has since filed a lawsuit challenging Virginias decision . In 2013 referendum results showed that more than 60% percent dissatisfied with current Board District boundaries

On February 14th of that year, after much debate and lobbying by anti-British forces in Virginia Beach City Hall (now called Old Yorktown), Suffolk County voters passed a resolution ratifying the Articles of Confederation.
