The Suffolk, Virginia Army National Guard has been deployed in support of the United States government since World War II. The Guard's history dates back to 1942 when the unit was organized as a regiment of the Virginia Military Institute. In 1959, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Suffolk Regiment and colors were bestowed on it by Governor John F. Kennedy during his visit to Suffolk in 1961. In 1969, Suffolk assumed its present name after being placed within one of two brigades established for purposes of providing guard duty for Virginian colleges and universities (the other brigade being in Norfolk). On October 15, 1984, the 1st Brigade became an element of III Corps under General George Casey and was activated at Fort Monroe. On November 3, 1988-just days after Patriots Day-the brigade redeployed to Shaw Field near Frederickburg, Maryland in preparation for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The brigade arrived there on November 10th and participated in ground combat operations until January 29th when it retired from active duty status at Fort Monroe. On May 4th 1992, following congressional approval of a bill authorizing appropriations for fiscal year 1993, I Troop 2nd Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment deploys with equipment to Beaumont Barracks located at Fort Worth Texas A&M University where they will be assigned to Easy Company Alpha Battalion 6th Cavalry Regiment which is currently serving as part of Task Force Cedar Rapids . The battalion deployment is also planned to coincide with national anniversary celebrations for Daniel Boone who served as captain and colonel with the army here in Suffolk County from 1786-1790 In 2003 I Troop 2nd Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment deploys supplies with equipment destined for Camp Lemonnier Haiti . This deployment was alsoplanned coinciding with commemoration events for Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide who had been forced into exile after leading a peaceful revolution against French rule On October 18 2006 all elements Deployed along side artillery Battery No 2 155MM howitzers M1A2E4F & M240B3G FFV towed guns Cannonade Valley Area south west cornerof old plantation house now known as Pinehurst Mansion home basecamp during Hurricane Katrina

Suffolk, Virginia is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 717,271. The county seat and largest city is Norfolk. Suffolk County comprises the Norfolk-Norfolk Metropolitan Statistical Area which had a population of 2,295,757 as of 2018. The county was created on March 25, 1847 from parts of New Kent and Sussex counties. It was named for John Lord Suffolk (1615-1665), 3rd Viscount Ipswich and 5th Earl Rivers (1627-1692). In 1851 Suffolk County lost its right to be called part of Virginia when President James K. Polk moved the U.S. capital from Philadelphia to Richmond in order to increase his control over southern Virginia despite the fact that Norfolk City had been founded by Englishmen only a few years earlier! The area now known as Suffolk includes both sides of the Elizabeth River which forms much of its border with New York State; east and west are separated by Portions of Hampshire County also belonging to New York State while parts including Wareham and Framingham are in Massachusetts Bay Colony (now Massachusetts). In 1612, English explorer Francis Hopkinson named this area Gloucester County after King Henry VIII of England. In 1871, a group of investors led by John D. Rockefeller founded what is now West Virginia Coal Company in this area. This company was responsible for developing the coal industry in southeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The arrival of automobiles and other technological advances created new opportunities for businesses and individuals throughout southeastern Ohio and west Pennsylvania during the 1920s and 1930s. significant industries such as aluminum manufacturing, steel production, automotive engineering, textiles and plastics manufacturers developed in these regions during these years. Suffolk County war veteran Edwin Booth became an American icon with his performance of Hamlet at the Woodstock Music Festival on July 5th, 1969 in nearby Elizabethtown. From then until his death on August 12th, 1969 at age 49 from a heart attack caused by overwork - Booth is generally considered to be one of America's most influential actors of all time
