Staunton, Virginia is a small town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Loudoun County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George Washington in 1753 as West Point State Park and then named for General James Staunton who commanded British forces during the American Revolution. The early history of Staunton is obscure; it may have been founded by one of the first English colonists to settled this area, JohnNRitchie, in 1607. In 1776, during the American Revolution, Staunton helped raise money for the Continental Army through itsown woolen mills. However, because of its small size and lack of defenses against British attack, Staunton was spared total destruction and destruction took place only to nearby Alexandria and Norfolk. Since then, Staunton has made strides to redevelop its economy into an important center for commerce and industry. Today's economy includes a variety of businesses such as banks, restaurants/bars/cafés/, health care providers/clinics/, transportation services/, real estate development/, manufacturing/, retail enterprises/, service industries/and more The first school building in what would become Staunton was built on South Main Street around 1790. By 1820 it had grown large enough that a school house on North Main Street became inadequate so an addition was built on top of the old schoolhouse which still stands today (the present day Administration Building). A new school was erected on High Street in 1827 which served students from grades 1-8 until 1948 when Marymount School opened on High Street which served grades 9-12 until 1984 when West End Middle School moved to their current location next door (now known as East End Elementary). In 1837 there were also two sawmills working together – one on High Street near where Presentation Hall now stands and another mill about five miles away along Sawmill Creek near present day US Route 29W. These mills produced raw wool for clothing manufacture until about 1870 when they stopped due to competition from imports from England In 1847 there were three stores located within walking distance of each other: one operated by John Smeaton (a Quaker) near present day Old Post Road; another by Wm Henson opposite present day US Route 29W corner Millstream Drive; and finally a store operated by Joseph Henson east side road betweenpresentday USRoute29W corner Indian Run Drive In 1861 there were ten shops operating within walking distance each: six stores run by Quakers with Joseph Henson as manager; two stores operated jointly by Thomas & James Stephenson; two stores run independently by B&O Railroad & Fidelity Insurance Company employees Tomlinson Bros.; Jardine Brothers Wholesale Store; George Washington Carpeting Company employee Butler Brothers Furniture Factory #2 (); Another store operated jointly between Gouverneur Morris & Sons Employees Woolen Mills Ltd.; Abraham Lincoln Store By 1920 there were twenty-eight shops operating within walking distance each: eighteen stores ran by Quakers with Joseph Henson as manager; four store operated jointly between Gouverneur Morris & Sons Employees Woolen Mills Ltd., Abraham Lincoln Store #1 & #2 ; four store operated independently by Wm Henson opposite present day USRoute 29W corner Indian Run Drive ; two store run concurrently between Thomas & James Stephenson The post office established at Staunton in 1800s precursor to modern USPS
