Staunton, Virginia is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Arlington–Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. Staunton is located at 38°48′15″N 77°14′00″W (38.766733°N 77.316735°W). The first white settlers in what is now Staunton were farmers and their families who arrived in 1777 from England via the Great Wagon Road. They named their new village "New Market." Over time, other settlers followed suit and by 1800 there were more than twenty dwellings in what became Staunton. In 1801 George Washington purchased 640 acres of land from John Smyth for $100 as a gift to the town of Staunton honoring his role as Commander-in-Chief during the American Revolution. The name "Washington" was chosen to honor both Washington's military leadership and America's first president because it was one word that could be found all over North America including New York City where he had been born two months earlier on November 15th, 1743. By 1825 only three dwellings remained in what became known as Old Market Square; these were replaced by frame buildings which still stand today within walking distance of each other on Main Street and Court House Square. In 1836 James Fenton laid out a plan for developing present day downtown Staunton which included building stockades around present day Main Street and Court House Square with an aim to keep livestock penned up while men worked inside without fear of theft or attack by Native Americans who ranched near the settlement at this time. This early development plan did not materialize but later developers built much larger structures Downtown which remain extant to this day including many large brick buildings now used as commercial orresidential properties such as The Bank Of America Building (1849), First National Bank (1850), State Capitol Building (1902) etc..
