Staunton is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 12,638 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Prince William County and was named after General James Staunton. Staunton was founded in 1771 by Capt. John Rankin and his family as Rankin's Station on the southern border of present-day Prince William County. The first permanent settler in what is now Staunton was George Washington who built a cabin there in 1775 while he travelled through the area on his way to mount Anacostia Creek for supplies to the Continental Army. In 1801, Captain John Rankin's son Jacob moved his family from Rankin’s Station to what is now downtown Staunton so that they could continue farming and raising livestock there until 1814 when they sold their land to Colonel Nathaniel Bacon for $2,500 cash. Colonel Bacon laid out streets and erected buildings which still stand today including Baptist Church (1802), Masonic Temple (1812), courthouse (1815), and jail (1829). In 1849, Captain John Rankin's grandson Honorable Richard Atherton bought 4 acres of land south ofpresent-day downtown Staunton from Major General Edmund Kirby Smith for $5 per acre which he used as a farmstead until 1861 when he sold it to Drury & Company insurance company president Gouverneur Morris for$10 per acre which he used as a farmstead until 1865 when he sold it to Elijah Parish Forney for $3 per acre which he used as a farmstead until 1888 when it became part of the city of Staunton. On December 5th, 1888, Mayor Henson submitted an ordinance declaring that all property within limits thereof be made one large block or township with its name changed from "Rankin Township" to "StaunTON". On February 14th, 1889, Mayor Henson presented an ordinance entitled "An act establishing a town meeting place within limits prescribed by this act" at which time both houses concurred therein and declared that thenceforth called "StauntON", located east side of Main Street between High Street & Market Streets had been established as the town meeting place with power vested therein “to constitute itself into any form or formality it may deem expedient” thereby establishing municipal government withintownship boundaries without further action by either house being needed; this act having been passed unanimously without debate upon recommendation of Mayor Henson himself! The first election held under municipal government occurred on April 3rd, 1889 with Elisha Pearce being electedMayor/First Vice President over Abram LaFayette Jr., who ran unsuccessfully for office that year! On May 1st 1890 Samuel Sayers was elected Collector/Coroner - becoming also first African American mayor in Virginian history! After serving two terms as Collector/ Coroner before retiring on July 15th 1902 Charles Waddell succeeded him! This event marks the beginningof what would become known as City Hall History Museum where ever since then every mayor has had their own museum housing all their records pertaining thereto! From 1898-1928 Councilman Augustus Chapman served alone during wartime years due to illness but due to lack of successors no mayoral term could be imposed without council consent! Additionally starting on January 1st 1929Councilman Harry White took over full time duties from Councilman Chapman effective immediately... 24 years later City Clerk Harry White resigned effective June 30th 2014 leaving Home Rule status quo unchanged thru 2016!!!

Staunton is a small town in Virginia about 20 miles west of Lynchburg. The population was 5,837 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Loudoun County. The first recorded mention of Staunton was in 1257 when it was known as "Thetouer." The name derives from the word "staune," meaning "settlement" or "homestead." In 1612, General James Westmoreland called it Stratton after Sir John Stratton who had helped him victory over the English at Battle of Cowpens. In 1701, William Byrd, 1st Baron Cadogan granted land to George Washington and his family in exchange for their services during the American Revolution. In 1800, Staunton became part of Prince William County which was created from parts of Fairfax and Montgomery Counties. In 1836, Staunton incorporated as a village under the name Tranterville. It reverted to its original name in 1865 when it became part of Loudoun County. In 1870, gold was discovered near Tranterville and several businesses were established around that time including one run by Jethro Gibbs called Gold Rush Mines (now known as Gibbs Oil). The town quickly grew because of its proximity to mining operations and began building roads and buildings to accommodate settlers who came to work at Gold Rush Mines and other mines throughout what is now Tranterville. By 1904, there were more than 500 residents living in Tranterville with shops, churches, schools and post offices located all around Purdy Street between Second Street and Third Street SBQVHZG

In 1812, General Scott's army crossed the river and fought its way into Virginia. Battle Creek named for General Scott's brigade (the first brigade to cross), became the battlefield of Staunton. The town grew rapidly after that, becoming a major railroad center and seat of government.
