Staunton is also the county seat of Henrico County. The first permanent settler in what would become Staunton was James Robertson in 1775. He and his family built a log cabin on the Potomac River near present-day Buchanan Street. The town was founded by Captain John Smith in 1779 as "New Town". In 1801, when Shenandoah Valley became part of Virginia, Staunton became its capital and served as the state capital from 1802 to 1804. On July 26, 1814, General Randolph Boggs burned down Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor to prevent British reinforcements from landing for the War of1812 inland. In 1830–33, Elijah Hicks developed a plan for developing an aggressive cotton plantation in what would later be known as Martinsville Heights overlooking Gordonsville Court House Park which would become one of America's largest slave plantations; Hicks' slaves were used to cultivate land that now includes parts of Middle School and neighboring neighborhoods on Interstate 95 just north of downtown Staunton. A major supporter and partner during this early phase of development for what would become today's cityscape was Senator Joseph Ettleton (D-Henrico). After Henderson's death in 1865 following a long illness, prominent businessman Augustus Chapman took over management while most local affairs were handled by Mr. Chapman's son Alvin Chapman until 1901 when both men died within months apart leaving their families ownership/management responsibility through their sons respectively with divided decision making authority until finally passing it down upon Alvin Chapman Jr.'s death without children or grandchildren having any legal say whatsoever about continuing governance It should be noted that much like other small towns throughout America due tohillbilly culture not many people know about or even remember these days back before social media really came into play with all kinds articles being written about every little thing so I thought I’d share some stuff here and maybe someone can go ahead and research more about it if they want too

Staunton, Virginia is a small town in Prince Edward County, Virginia. The population was 2,773 at the 2010 census. Staunton is located on the Potomac River and has a humid subtropical climate. Founded in 1754 by Captain John Smith as an English settlement on the forks of the James and Shenandoah Rivers, Staunton quickly grew into one of America's early agricultural backwaters. Today, Staunton is a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its English-speaking neighbors in Maryland and Northern Virginia. The earliest settler in what would become Staunton was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1754 on the James River from Jamestown. He named his new community after himself - "Staunton" meaning "place where trees grow." By 1800, over 60% of all land near Petersburg had been taken up for farming by Virginians alone - more than any other region of America at that time! As this wealth attracted attention from European colonists, many Scots-Irish immigrants settled in Staunton as well. These newcomers brought their own cultural norms and traditions with them when they moved to what would eventually be called "the Tidewater." Today, many people in Staunton still refer to themselves as "Scotch-Irish," which may be why some aspects of their culture remain so strong today despite changesover time. In 1802, Governor George Washington created Prince Edward County out of parts of Loudoun and Fairfax Counties (including much of present day Arlington). The county seat was first established at Alexandria but it relocated several times before settling permanently at Staunton in 1824. In 1829, King George III granted voting rights to African Americans within Prince Edward County - making it one of only two counties in America without such a provision! This decision helped spur political integration withinPrince Edward County during the hastening Civil War years. After Union troops sacked Petersburg during the war's opening weeks (1865), General Robert E Lee ordered all black men living within Confederate lines held captive until he could find someone willing to ransom them! This action effectively ended Reconstruction efforts across much of southern American soil - a process that began nearly two decades earlier!.
