The first coffee shops in Staunton, Virginia date back to the 1800s. The early cafes served local newspapers and other publications. From there, the coffee industry grew rapidly and began serving larger populations. By the 1920s, many of these early cafes had closed or been converted into restaurants. One of the earliest Starbucks was founded in 1971 in a small strip mall on Route 123 adjacent to Union College. The store soon became one of the largest in town, with more than 2,000 square feet of floor space. Today Starbucks is located at 375 North Main Street in downtown Staunton. In 1982, two brothers opened The Gourmet Coffee Company in what is now known as The Mercantile Place Shopping Center off Interstate 95 near Front Royal University. At that time, Gourmet Coffee was one of the few U.S.-based specialty coffee companies that sold beans direct to consumers rather than through franchises or retailers like Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s (later KFC). Gourmet Coffee continued operations until 2000 when it merged with Dutch Bros., Inc., an Atlanta-based importers and distributors of high-quality European coffees, to form Starbucks Corporation (SBUX). In 2006 SBUX merged with Dutch Bros.' parent company Keurig Green Mountain Incorporated (KME) to form Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) Trust Co., Ltd. On July 1st 2014 Starbucks Corporation announced it would close 150 stores worldwide by 2021 due to competitive pressure from Amazon (AMZN) . However, they will continue selling their brand online and through its legacy subsidiaries such as Dunkin' Donuts(DNKN), Burger King(BK) and Caribou Coffee(CRC).

Staunton's history of coffee begins with the early days of Dutch coffee production in the area. Coffee was originally brewed for export, but soon became a popular local commodity. In 1736, Nicholas Culpeper purchased some land adjacent to present-day Staunton and began to produce coffee. The first shop in town opened in 1738. By 1745, Culpeper's Coffee House had become one of the most famous places in town for its quality and flavor of coffee. In 1823, John Stephenson opened his own grocery store on Main Street in Staunton. This store continued to be carried forward through several other owners until it closed in 1924. In 1938, JB Robinson moved into the building and started stocking both grocery items and coffee products. At this time, Robinson's was one of the few stores that sold both types of items together. From here on out, Robinson's would become known as "The Coffee Shop". Over time, other businesses have popped up within walking distance of The Coffee Shop including a bakery which still operates today (Coffee Marketing Committee), a gas station (now closed), an ice cream parlor (now demolished) and even an ambulance service!
Staunton, Virginia is a town in Prince Frederick County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Staunton is located on U.S. Route 1 and its main street is Main Street. The first mention of Staunton can be found in an 18th century document as "Tanton." The name derived from an early Potomac Indian chief named Tasontaalik and his family's holdings around what is now Tanton Heights in Prince Frederick County. The land that would become Staunton was surveyed in 1784 by Colonel John Smith and it was given to Elijah Woodson (1753-1827) who built a mill on the stream running through the town later known as Mill Creek. A post office called "Tanton" was established in 1809, and remained in operation until 1865 when it was renamed "Washington." In 1824 George Stephenson erected a sawmill on the creek which became known as Stephenson's Run due to its proximity to this milling activity. Stephenson also laid out streets and buildings in what are today parts of downtown Staunton while he continued making lumber for his business partner’s homebuilding company, Oneida & Whitworth Builders Company (now Alliance Lumber). In 1828 Stephenson married Mary Anne Whitworth and their family moved permanently to nearby Alexandria where they started another lumber company before finally moving back to Mount Pleasant where they died several years later. During World War II many German POWs were held here including Generalmajor Erwin Rommel who spent time at Hammond Airfield near present day Friendship Heights before being captured by American forces over the weekend of May 10-12, 1945; he was then taken into custody at Fort Myer outside Arlington National Cemetery for transportation back to Germany after his surrender ceremonies occurred that same day aboard USS Missouri (BB-63). He remains one of history's most celebrated prisoners of war despite having been liberated by U.S Forces about two weeks earlier than scheduled when he had surrendered at Altenburg near Wiesbaden am Rhein instead! It wasn't until after World War II that much development took place within Staunton thanks largely to immigrants such as Polish Americans Franciszek Korbowski and his wife Rosina who arrived legally during wartime: Korbowski farmed east of town while working odd jobs; Rosina ran a movie theater which opened its doors just south of Main Street; her husband operated a grocery store across from their house until his death suddenly age 85+ years old less than three weeks ago! Today many businesses remain open but with increased competition from neighboring communities due primarily to technology advances such as internet cafes, Amazon Web Services data centers which have replaced physical stores throughout central Maryland including those along US Route 1A south of downtown Staunton center - any business owner worth their salt knows how quickly online traffic changes these types OF venues! nonetheless some things never change no matter how fast or slow technology moves forward! most notably our small Main Street farmers market which has been going strong since 1978 - something not easilyreplicated anywhere else today!

It is located on the Potomac River near Area Code 703 and has been nicknamed "The City of Oaks" because of its many oak trees. Staunton was founded by James Fenton in 1784 as a small log cabin community named for his birthplace in Scotland. In 1851, Staunton became an incorporated town after it voted to become part of Fairfax County. The growth of Fairfax County has led to the displacement of many longtime residents of Staunton and other rural areas within the county. The lack of affordable housing has also resulted in some people leaving their homes for economic reasons.

Today, Staunton is an aging but vibrant city with a rich history that has been deeply influenced by its location on the Potomac River. It is home to several large universities as well as museums and businesses throughout its downtown area.
