By 1614 all land east of the Potomac had been claimed by James I of England for the colony of North Carolina but no action was taken on this claim until 1621 when Sir Walter Raleigh sent one John Smith to explore these areas The first permanent English settler in what would become Staunton was Captain John Smith who arrived in Portsmouth, Virginia with his Family on September 3rd, 1781 while exploring new lands grants along the Potomac River grant were made to Colonel Nicholas Mynydd and others including two hundred acres (0.8 km²) to James Longstreet soon after he became military governor of Prince Georges County following its Acquisition from Lord Fairfax Captain John Smith's Landing Site which can be visited today at 4001 Old York Road offers an excellent view over both Washington D.C., Arlington County and Prince Georges County . Captain John Smith's Landing Site also includes a reconstructed house built by local residents in 1975 which served as the headquarters for First Naval District Headquarters during World War II In 18th century America not many people traveled beyond Colonial Williamsburg so it is difficult to know much about early American life outside of Jamestown/Williamsburg especially since most accounts focus on more important issues such as war or trade . However there are several references that show early American settlers living close to water sources making hunting and fishing their main activities These include: “A map or planisphere published by William Byrd Jr., Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina shows twenty five white families residing within six miles (10 km) radius around New Town Plantation where they fished daily out of Kingfisher’s Creek” (Anson Mosely III p 223) “On January 8th, 1800 Francis Meade reported hearing cannon fire just south side river opposite tavern where he resided” (Taylor 321) In 1785 Samuel French moved from Mount Vernon into what would become Staunton settling down around Newtown creek near modern day US Route 622 . He also began marketing tobacco products through his shop next door known as French's Store until it burned down in 1812 One other reference that may provide insight into early American life in this area is Albin Monson’s diary entry for December 10th 1789 At about three pm we embarked our canoe & went up stream 4 rods only findingered upon shoal between Great Falls & [Winchester] streams; however our launch being very leaky we got back without wetting ourselves We landed at [Mount Vernon] about noon expecting diversionary fire but nothing happened usaing our return trip we took 2 hours instead going probably 50 rods only getting lost again On reaching [Mount Vernon] found out there were 3 houses there one standing still another knocked down & within sight 2 others building but no doors & window coverings; moreover every inhabitant seemed quite naked excepting 1 boy who came out wearing nothing but breeches & having a little stockinged foot Our guide told us that before this place lay waste by Indians they inhabitated hereabout thirty years ago They gave us directions how to get back Home safety being concerns about Indian hostilities continuing even after their removal This particular event gives rise to speculation that Charles Lee , laterGovernorof VA - acquired [ mount ] Vernon from[Samuel French] prior to its inclusion within RichmondcountyIn 1787 Major Anthony Wayneiere explored portions of present day Rappahannock County via survey using his quadrupeds westward across Potomac River Valley 100 miles upstream from contemporary Winchester ancestor General James Longstreet
