The town was first established as a small community on a peninsula in the Susquehanna River and was named for General Staunton, an officer in King George's army who fought in the American Revolution. In 1789, Staunton became the capital of Prince George's County. The current courthouse serving as county seat was built in 1872 and replaced an earlier courthouse that burned down in 1834. One of Staunton's most famous natives is President James K. Polk who served two terms (1841-45) as governor of Virginia and one term (1849-53) as president of the United States before moving to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to become mayor there in 1855.
