Staunton, Virginia is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Petersburg–Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to find and map the area that now includes Staunton were two men named Edward Thomas and Christopher Newport in 1607. In 1775 John Adams lived in what is now called "Adams House" on North Main Street for about a year before moving to Lexington, Kentucky. Other pioneers include Captain George Washington who purchased land near present-day Arlington Cemetery from Lord Fairfax in 1788; and General James Ewell who purchased land east ofpresent-day Charlottesville in 1800. During the American Revolution, Staunton was one of three towns successfully defended by British forces against patriot attack on April 12th, 1778 – five days after Yorktown (Falls Church) falls to Burgoyne's army under General Cornwallis. For this service, Governor Franklin presented General Washington with a horse chestnut tree as a token of appreciation. In 1871 entrepreneur Colonel Hiram Harrod organized and started the first electric street car system in America outside of Boston or New York City when heopened his line between Lynchburg and Harrisonburg along Virginia's then new Highways 5&6 Publix Road which ran parallel to present day US 301/ primary route today known as I-64 (the old alignment). At its peak there were over 100 cars operating daily between Harrisonburg & Lynchburg with stops at various businesses including local churches & schools; it also served as an early form of mass transportation for people living close to each other without having to leave their homes during rush hours or take public transportation which was often difficult or impossible to use during those times . By 1929 the system had been discontinued due largely to economics reasons related primarily to high rates charged by competing operators.; however it has been restored several times since then most recently in 2007 when it reopened as part of efforts by local business owners led by Treasurer Leslie McFarlane & Mayor Pro Tem Geoff Hensley within walking distance of Harrod's original terminus on Knotts Mill Road !! This reintroduction marks one significant milestone along one important corridor serving many remote villages throughout Prince William County !! After more than 150 years being dormant some major restoration efforts are ongoing such as complete replacement of all trackage within 5 miles radius around RR depot including installation of new power lines (& substation), resurfacing street surfaces & reconstruction/removal/replacementof several hundred feet+ long (> 60') culverts adjacent thereto making up Rivers Branch drainage project ); Additionally work is underway on two large parklands located just south side RR Depot off southbound UHwy 301 & north side RR Depot off northbound I-64 (the former alignment) ; these projects will provide much needed recreational space for residents while also helping support economic development activities throughout our community

Staunton is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 34,486 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Potomac River and borders Loudoun County to the north and west; Stafford County to the east; and Frederick County to the south. Founded by planters in 1757 as "Nottenville", Staunton grew rapidly during the American Revolution as a center of trade and political opposition to George Washington. In 1801, it became an incorporated town under the name of "Staunton". The town's growth accelerated after James K. Polk became president in 1845 and ordered construction of a canal through central Virginia in order to provide water for agriculture and industry. The canal made Staunton one of America's most prosperous towns, but it also caused some stability problems because nearby Alexandria had greater agricultural potential than did Staunton. This problem was solved by annexing Alexandria in 1871, which increased agricultural production while reducing competition from Alexandria. In 1907, Staunton annexed Dulles Airport so that it could have its own airport authority. The decline of heavy manufacturing during World War II led to a resurgence of small-scale agriculture in postwar Staunton; this growth was stunted by difficulties with farming technology during the early 21st century due to changing global patterns of food supply and demand. However, since 2000s there has been significant development both related to retail employment within local businesses as well as large developments with respect to housing: In October 2017, Amazon announced plans for $1 billion construction project called “HQ2” which will create up to 50 thousand jobs across 15 counties in Virginia alone (including Staunton) over 4 decades[5]
The town of Staunton, Virginia was founded by George Washington in 1781. The town was named for General James Staunton, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1802, the town became part of Alexandria County, Virginia. In 1834, the county was divided into two parts, and Staunton absorbed one of those parts. The town continued to be part of Alexandria County until 1947.
