Salem, Virginia is a town in Henrico County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg– Colonial Heights–Fairfax Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become Salem was first settled by English colonists in 1635 as part of the Colony of Henrico. In 1737, George Washington purchased 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land from John Smith for $5. On November 3, 1737, Washington and his army attacked an Indian party on Mount Vernon and destroyed most of their village to prevent them from using it as a base of operations against the British forces besieging Fort Necessity near Petersburg. A year later in 1738, Washignton surveyed and purchased 2/3 acre (1 km2) of land east of what is now Salem for £10 from James Lancaster. In August 1739, Washingtons aide-de-camp named Nicholas Culpeper granted him two acres (0.80 km2) west of present day Salem for "a public house" which might be used by the soldiers quartered there during their stay in town while they awaited orders from London to march against Canada or West Africa. In December 1740, Washingtons team walked across what is now downtown Salem on foot to survey the area for possible settlement after learning that no one else wanted to purchase property in what were then swampy areas between Salems creek and Mount Vernon Creek due to its high costliness relative to other locations around Richmond County at that time. By early February 1741, representatives from both England and America had met at Portsmouth Meeting House in Portsmouth VA about proposing plans for a new capital city within Richmond County where all citizens could be represented including those living outside the original planned boundaries - this would eventually become Yorktown when Yorktown won independence from Britain in1781). On February 14th & 15th both days only men were allowed into the meeting house & business was conducted with scars being inflicted upon hands if any tokens or money were given without proper credentials or presentation - this indicates that there must have been some interest or discussion aboutsalem before it was decided not to move forward with creating a new capital city based on its potential importance as an agricultural center due to its rich soil & easy access to markets; nevertheless it remains one of most famous unsolved mysteries surroundingRichmond County history

Nevertheless, Salem is still home to some of America's most impressive buildings – such as its flagship courthouse (built in 1799), colonial-era homes dating back to before European settlement (including an Anglican church built in 1692), and Salems largest public school (opened in 1829).
Salem, Virginia was part of the Colony of Virginia. The first English settlers in what is now Salem were John Smith and his family who arrived in 1607. They named their plantation "Salem". In 1629, James I of England granted a charter to the Company of Merchants Adventurers for trading with the new world. This allowed for the colony to be chartered as an independent town called Portsmouth on Great Britain's coast. This was also when Salem become one of the most important settlements in North America and one of its leading religious centers. In 1755, during the French and Indian War, General George Washington's army attacked Portsmouth and burned down many of its buildings including the old courthouse which still stands today. The town stopped being a commercial center after that and slowly lost its population until it finally disappeared altogether in 1958 when it merged with Winchester to form Winchester-Salem-Winchester County.
