Salem, Virginia has been a historical site since the 16th century. The town was originally called Boston and then Salem. In 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “no Loyalist city or town in this State shall be made the seat of government”. This edict helped to create an separated military community in Salem, which continued to function as a stronghold for Patriotism until after the War of 1812. The first military deployment in Salem took place on December 5, 1775 when General George Washington and his army disembarked at Samuel Adams Pier on Portsmouth Harbour. The troops were welcomed by Mayor John Hancock and other civic leaders who provided them with refreshments and lodging. As part of their training, Washington ordered his corps commanders to drill at Second Life Park near downtown Salem. In 1778, Colonel John Forbes led an expedition against Saratoga Springs in upstate New York but was unable to take the fortifications due to bad weather conditions. President James Ketchum ordered Forbes to re-enter Albany with reinforcements but on arrival discovered that he had lost all his supplies including cannon firepowder! A second expedition was organized under Colonel David Hunter and they succeeded in taking Fort Niagara but also lost many men during the journey Home. On October 15, 1780 Commodore Nicholas Biddle sailed into Hampton Roads from Newport News with 5 warships carrying 110 soldiers and marines destined for Fortress Halifax NS where they would meet General Cornwallis who had recently surrendered at Yorktown Peninsula VA after four years of fighting against American forces. When news reached Salem that British regulars were landing there they quickly mobilized their citizens into militias providing them with arms and munitions necessary for battle even before news arrived back home about what was happening ashore! On November 8 Governor Randolph issued a proclamation calling for residents from all over Virginia to assemble at Lexington Green in order “to repel any attempt by force whatever upon our liberties” After assembling more than 1,000 people various companies marched towards Lexington Green determined not only to resist British aggression but also protect their homes from looters! Unfortunately for these patriots shortly before dawn on November 9th several hundred militiamen forced their way onto Lexington Green resulting in more than twenty killed (most likely Tories) as well as large quantities of looted goods including cannons, ammunition and clothing! The following day militia groups linked together formed square blocks known as Pelican Row while crowding around one another yelling insults (and sometimes firing shot) at those unfortunate enough to have crossed their path! Today Salem remains an important community economically but is also known for its annual Pumpkin Festival which celebrates both its agricultural heritage as well as its diverse cultural attractions such as art galleries and jazz concerts.

Salem, Virginia is a town located in Lynchburg County, Virginia. The population was 11,536 at the 2010 census. It has been the site of several witch trials and other public scandals in its history. The first known Salem settlement occurred on Catawba Island in 1692 by English colonists. In 1719, the British government moved the main part of Portsmouth to Salem as part of an anti-Catholic purge in England. The Witch Trials began on October 20, 1749, when nine women were arrested for allegedly practicing witchcraft. Nine more people were later charged and executed for trial purposes; seven of these individuals had also been convicted of various misdemeanors related to their religious beliefs. In 1837, Salem was platted as a town by Samuel Chase Goodloe and others who saw it as an opportunity to exploitation mineral resources found thereabouts including coal, iron ore and limestone. However, little progress was made until 1865 when developer John Marshall Dorman purchased land from Goodloe and constructed what would become one of America's first commercial cotton plantations. With development came social unrest which culminated with three days of riots in 1876: two nights during which over 100 people were killed and 400 injured; and a daylong period during which taxes were raised to protest lack of services such as water supply or education that had been promised but not delivered. Dorman abandoned his plantation after years of trouble with creditors; however, another developer - Jerald Covington - bought it back from Dorman in 1978 and developed it into one of Charlottesville's most popular neighborhoods with homes beginning sales around 1990s primarily because they were "far enough out [of town] that you could say you lived on top."Today's residents are still largely descended from those who founded the town nearly 250 years ago: many are descendants of early settlers such as Samuel Chase Goodloe or John Marshall Dorman himself
